I would bat Melton leadoff, then Preston Jones, then Ober, then Claunch.
I was really cold on Preston last year, and I am eating bigtime crow. The guy can BUNT!!!!!
I would have him bunt twice a game if possible, just to keep the opposing third baseman honest.....

I like putting your best hitters high in the line-up (including leadoff) and our best player is Melton. Obviously the higher up in the batting order the more AB's you get and the more ABs he gets the better off we are. He is also our fastest player. I like MC's line-up. I also wish that McMahon could improve his hitting and become a regular, but I don't see it. He puts his right foot into the "bucket" on almost every swing. I'm surprised that Casey hasn't excelled, but he is facing very high expectations and that pressure could be his problem. As a old school old timer I would like to see more contact and a lot less K's. More hitters using thicker handle bats and even choking up and going to the opposite field.

Beavs did a lot better going opposite field Sunday than any other game, and Joe benefited from just trying to make contact back up the middle instead of attempting to pull the ball out over the bullpens every time. We have so much speed - Melton, Ober, Jones, Forrester, Claunch, Army - right now all 6 are making great contact and Troy especially is cleaning up his game. Half our losses would be wins if he and the pitchers had played their positions like they did this weekend. And for as much talk about the Baker kid, great player for sure, Melton seems to be morphing into another level. If he can keep this up the rest of the season, he is going to lead the others on by example. That Duck soup we ended up in Eugene might have just changed the trajectory of this team. Beat Portland!

I like all the comments I have seen about Casey...very disappointed with his approach. Goes up there swinging from his heals the majority of the time...I think the first few games in the spring are still affecting his mindset. (4 homeruns I think in the first 10 games or so...?)
Anyway, the guy we should be talking about is Meckler. The guy is a baller, and has a major game face, scrappy attitude that this team really needs. He has quality at bats, will hit to all fields, and take the groundout to the right side when he has a man on second...true team player.
That is my major criticism of Casey. He has come up in numerous situations to advance a runner with a mere ground out, but he decides to try to go "Golden Boy" and try to knock out the lights in the right field light standard...crazy.
One game, we were down by one. Nobody out, he comes up with bases loaded, the opposing pitcher just walked the bases loaded. What does he do? Swings at the first pitch, pops out to shortstop! Killer!
Anyway, like what I saw this weekend....great fundamental ball, hope we keep it up!

Not sure what you mean by speed by including Forrester and Claunch in that conversation....those two are no threat stealing and are apt to get in double plays. Our true speedsters are Melton, Jones and McMahon....Army and Ober are average. So I like the idea of Melton and Jones batting 1-2....then Ober

Anyway, like what I saw this weekend....great fundamental ball, hope we keep it up! 4 home runs in the first 22 games. 3 home runs in the first five. Casey came out mashing the ball. In the eight games in Arizona, Casey was 11/35 (.314) with two 2Bs, three HRs, 7 R, 13 RBI and 3 walks. Since then, he is 19/73 (.260) with two 2Bs, a triple, a HR, 10 R, 10 RBI and 11 walks. To put that in perspective, he had more homers in the first five games than in the next 29 and more RBI in the first 7 games than in the last 27. Casey's home/away splits are pretty stark: At Goss: 12/49 (.245) with a 2B, 7 R and 3 RBI. Everywhere Else: 18/59 (.305) with three 2Bs, a triple, four homers, 10 R and 20 RBI.Even more stark is his play in Oregon and outside of Oregon: In Oregon: 14/60 (.233) with two 2Bs, 8 R and 3 RBI. Everywhere else: 16/48 (.333) with two 2Bs, a triple, four homers, 9 R and 20 RBI.
I am wondering if he is just putting too much pressure on himself at local games. Away from Oregon, he can just be Joe. Dunno. Weird, though.

Here are some Pac 12 numbers for our lineup. AVG AB R H 2B HR RBI SLG% BB SO OB% Melton .413 46 11 19 3 4 14 .870 5 11 .471 Ober .298 57 15 17 2 3 14 .491 12 13 .417 Dukart .357 56 10 20 6 0 9 .464 8 12 .448 Forrester .333 57 10 19 2 4 15 .579 10 13 .457 Claunch .311 45 4 11 2 0 2 .356 8 11 .418 Casey .326 43 9 14 1 1 10 .465 5 13 .380
Armstrong .236 55 8 13 1 1 4 .309 4 14 .323
Meckler .292 24 3 7 2 0 4 .375 1 7 .346
Jones .325 40 10 13 0 0 4 .325 3 9 .386
I like what the coaches are doing with the first 5 batters, these guys get on base. They also have the best doubles and homerun power.
The bottom 4 you can mix and match. I personally like Jones in the 9 spot because he's fast.
