A few short weeks ago I was pretty optimistic about the Beavs ability to put the ball in the basket next season. Last year, lack of getting points from the 3 and/or 4 position hurt the Beavs during the 1st half of the season, but then the team found their offensive game, and with the addition of Talia, became a very good half court offensive team. So, the earliest look at next year looked good...Talia, Sasha, Taylor, and possibly Aleah and Ellie, with Greta and Kennedy added to the mix.....then the bottom fell out. Aleah, decided to move forward with her life, Sasha wanted to return home, etc. Just Aleah and Sasha alone were 27-28 points per game. How would the Beavs make that up?
Well, we don't know yet if all the players currently on the team are returning, and as of this writing, we don't have any confirmed additions for next year. Additions will happen, and we are expecting to learn of some as early as today.
There are two quarters of Beavers WBB that I have enjoyed watching numerous times in recent weeks. Those are the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the Beavers victory over the ducks in the Pac-12 tournament. In both those quarters the Beavs outscored the ducks by 10 points. The 3rd quarter of that game was the Beavs best quarter of offensive basketball all year, and probably the most enjoyable to watch. The good news for next year, the following are the Beaver points scored during that quarter:
Taylor 8
Taya 8
Talia 8
Ellie 3
Aleah 4
27 of the 31 points scored in that quarter are from players that, as of this moment, are returning next season. Talia is a scoring machine and Taylor is going to get her points as well. I think what this quarter of play tells me is that the Beavs are capable of putting up nice offensive numbers next season. Solid and consistent play from the other positions will be key. I've been a little worried that the overall talent may not be there, but after watching the 3rd quarter of that game again, I think I may have underestimated the potential of next year's team.
