I really like Melton at first, he catches every errant throw, but maybe he has to play RF just to get rid of a dead bat.
He may not be a strong hitter, but when you have good hitters like Forrester, Ober, and Dukart not hitting, then perhaps the problem isn't McMahan.
Statistically, Ahlstrom is the third-best starter in the Pac-12 and second-best that is not wearing an Oregon State jersey. The guy is tough for anyone to hit off of. The fact of the matter is that the Beavers did better against Ahlstrom than they did last time, just not enough to pull out the W.
Oregon State is averaging nine strikeouts a game, which is the third-highest rate in the Pac-12 behind only behind (ahead?) of Utah and Washington State. Having said that, Stanford is in a statistical dead heat with Oregon State in strikeouts.
Despite facing the second-best pitcher in the Pac-12 that does not wear orange and black, Oregon State only finished with one strikeout more than average.
Dukart finished with a silver sombrero. Each plate appearance after his first was a strikeout. It is tough to recover, when your leadoff hitter picks up a silver sombrero. Dukart has been a phenomenal hitter against righties, but my hot take is that Dukart should not hit leadoff against an elite lefty starter like Ahlstrom. In fact, last time against Ahlstrom, Dukart went 0/3 with two strikeouts. The only thing that he managed with an extra plate appearance was another strikeout.
Preston Jones, who is better than a nine hitter against a lefty starter (generally), got on three out of his four plate appearances. Jones battled to pick up a seven-pitch walk in the third. 83% of the time, at least one run is scored with a runner on first and no outs. Dukart struck out. 49%. Jones made it to second on a passed ball. 64%. Melton popped out to second. 31%. Jones advanced to third on a wild pitch. 41%. Forrester grounded out to short. 0-0.
Kyler McMahan led off the fifth with a fly ball to right. Jones singled to center. 49%. Dukart struck out. 21%. Melton struck out. 0-0.
Armstrong led off the seventh with a base hit. 83%. McDowell successfully sacrificed Armstrong to second. 64%. McMahan flew out to right to drive Armstrong to third. 41%. Jones walked to put runners on the corners. 41% and 21% to score two runs. Dukart struck out.
Jones was the final out but otherwise had a great game.
I question Dukart leading off against Ahlstrom. I question Jones hitting ninth.
