From Baseball America
By Teddy Cahill Joe Healy on March 27, 2021 Kevin Abel, Jack Leiter Prove Unhittable
Oregon State’s Kevin Abel and Vanderbilt’s Jack Leiter are two of the best pitchers in the country. And while they on Friday were separated by nearly 2,000 miles, they were both unhittable.
Abel threw six hitless innings as a part of a combined no-hitter for Oregon State in a 3-0 victory at Washington. Relievers Joey Mundt, Chase Watkins and Jake Mulholland each threw a hitless inning apiece to complete the effort.
“It was just fun to go out there and pitch and get a win, especially to start a series off,” said Abel, the 2018 Freshman of the Year. “We know we’re fully capable of doing special stuff like this all the time, knowing how deep our staff is.”
Oregon State (15-5, 3-1) again has one of the best pitching staffs in the Pac-12 and beyond. The Beavers have a 2.45 team ERA and Abel (2-3, 2.93), Mundt (1-0, 2.08), Watkins (0-0, 0.00) and Mulholland (1-0, 0.00, 6 SV) are a big part of that.
But on Friday some of the credit also belonged to the Beavers’ defense and catcher Troy Claunch.
“He called a great game tonight,” Abel said. “It’s nice to have a guy back there that I trust and knows me so well. He does a lot of prep to figure guys out and he did a fantastic job.

Hitting a few batters is ok. Have to own the inner half.
And we can add Washburn to our list of dealing pitchers. Last 3 outings he's got 9 IP with 1 hit allowed 2 walks and 14K.
Salgado is another who's been pitching very well

I like the fact that we have dependable arms so there’s no reason to keep someone in when they are having an off day. Every pitcher will have that kind of a day.

Just imagine if Abel gets his command back

Just imagine if Abel gets his command back I know, it's annoying when all you are doing is plunking guys with curves that don't curve. Guy gets to first and he's joking with our 1st baseman, instead of our guy saying "wow, that must hurt, you know you want to rub it"

Odd. At least for the earlier games. UW stream barely could make out any thing.

Pitching inside is mandatory for success. You do not surrender the inside corner for fear of hitting a batter.
Abel and Washburn attack the inner half with their foot on the gas.
Choosing to hang a body part over the plate could shorten your season.

This all makes sense, and correct me if I'm wrong here, but I feel like the majority of Abels hit batters have been pitches that got away from him, not so much challenging guys

But he's walking 4 and hitting 3 in 6 innings, and that is the only way they are getting on base. Scary when he hits WS form as this season goes on, for the other teams that is.

Choosing to hang a body part over the plate could shorten your season. It wasn’t that many years ago aluminum bats had many college coaches preaching pitching away. I remember reading how MLB scouts bemoaned how none of the top college pitchers would go inside.
