This is Loyola of Chicago's fifth appearance in the Sweet Sixteen. The Ramblers are 2-2 in the Sweet Sixteen with wins over Mississippi State in 1963 and Nevada in 2018 and losses to Michigan in 1964 and Georgetown in 1985.
Both Michigan and Georgetown advanced to the Final Four after defeating Loyola of Chicago. Michigan lost to Duke 91-80 in the Final Four in 1964. Georgetown advanced to the Championship Game before losing to Villanova by two.
This is Oregon State's seventh appearance in the Sweet Sixteen, although, officially, the 1982 Sweet Sixteen appearance was subsequently vacated. The Beavers are 5-1 in the Sweet Sixteen. Oregon State beat Seattle in 1955, Pepperdine in 1962, San Francisco in 1963, Houston in 1966 and Idaho in 1982. The Beavers' lone loss was to Indiana in 1975.
It should be noted that between 1939 and 1950, the Pacific Coast Champion was automatically entered into the Elite Eight, so the Pacific Coast Conference Championship Game was the de facto Sweet Sixteen. In between 1939 and 1950, Oregon State won the North in 1940, 1942, 1947 and 1949. The North hosted in odd years and the South hosted in even years. In the 31-year history of the Pacific Coast Conference Championship Game, the road team won exactly seven times. Oregon State lost on the road to USC in 1940 and to eventual National Champion Stanford in 1942 but won at home against UCLA in both 1947 and 1949 to advance to the Elite Eight.
