One of the worst is not being able to score.....
The Beavs scored 5 in the 1st quarter against Oregon recently...But today the scoring droughts were longer and worser. I'm holding off judgment right now because nobody anywhere looks good when they can't make a shot.... Figuring out WHY they can't make a shot is the tough part of trying to figure to how good this team is....
All in the all, this is the first terrible game in a long while for the Beavs.
How much has to do with their fundamental weakness as a team, and how much has to do with what we call "just having a bad day" -and yes there is such a thing in basketball - is the big mystery...
Many of us have coached teams that have not been fleeced at mid-court 3 times in an entire season - today it happened to the Beavs 3 times in the first half -- you've got a tough mystery to solve if you think you can figure out that one...
Why Taylor Jones went brain-dead in the 1st 6 minutes of the game is beyond my comprehension and I'm sure if Rueck had any hair to pull out, he would have done it by now....
At any rate, the girls put together a great second half of the season this year. They thumped FSU in the tourney, and they beat Oregon and UCLA down the stretch in the PAC.
I'm still making my contributions. I'm still waiting for Gill to open up for business, and I'm still a big, big Beaver fan...
But today they sure stunk up the gym....It happens. GO BEAVS!!

It may have something to do with playing against an elite defense!

Seems to be the pattern for a while now, when they lose in the Tourney, they lose BIG.

Taylor Jones’ extra long arms are a blessing on offense. But at times they seem to be a curse for her on D. She reaches too much and picks up fouls in the process.

A thoughts from me:
1- We need 10 or so points and 2-3 3 pointers from our 4’s (Taya/Ellie) We got 0 points and 0-8 shooting. That allows the defense to give more attention to shutting down Aleah, Taylor, etc.
2- Taylor has to learn how to not go for the ball with her arms when she gets into foul trouble. Get big strait up and if they make the shot they make it. Her on the floor is more important than that basket. I know she’s getting coached on this, but she needs to work on it.
3- Savanah and Sasha need to spend the off season working on their ball handling. If they can get better handling the ball, they will get so much better offensively.
4- Jelena needs to get stronger in her base. Stronger legs will get her more stable in her base and even a bit quicker. She’s got potential.
It’s now on Scott to recruit Aleah to return. Get it done Scott!

Taya can also work on her strength, quickness, and ball handling over the summer. I love Taya, and want to see her have a HUGE season next year.

We needed the Taya who showed up against South Carolina as a sophomore tonight and, unfortunately, we didn't get her. It's hard to win games when you can't score. I thought we executed the defensive game plan pretty well.
Talia seemed very out of it and we just weren't able to score the ball. Greta has the potential to be a good scorer at this level, so she should provide a boost next year. When we aren't getting three point shooting out of Ellie and Taya, we begin to really miss Kennedy at the four spot for her defense and rebounding.
Excited for the growth of Sasha, Savannah, Talia, and Greta at the guard positions.

Today was an example of ELITE talent as a group, overpowering semi-elite talent. John Wooden and Pat Summit COULDN'T coach this OSU team to two wins out of ten against this S.C. team. Talent and athleticism. It isn't a criticism. I think we HAVE elite talent on this team, but they are young'ns. They'll get there.

TVO really did not have a great showing in both games...seemed off either physically, mentally or both. Was not making the same good decisions she did early on. Her arms were often down at her sides, which usually means she's tired, but it's not like she was playing tons of minutes. Did not look good trying to handle the ball against South Carolina either. Probably just everything catching up with her and going from high school to the NCAA tourney in such a short period of time.

From the Seattle Times:
Staley’s plan was to get Jones into foul trouble — and it worked, with Jones limited to 18 minutes.
“We would have been in trouble because she could have erased the lead that we had with just her production,” Staley said.
Did someone forget to tell Taylor "your presence on the court is worth more than trying to contest a basket!"

I'm not going to say a lot. This team struggled early in the year as the majority of the starters had not played together, and didn't get to practice throughout summer and fall and part of winter because of Covid. They got little scoring from the 3 or 4 spot which hurt even more early on......but then they grew, added an extra ball handler, and were making solid progress. The lack of scoring from the 3 and 4 hurt again tonight, but there were obviously other problems.
This team will get to practice this summer and fall, add new bodies (Kennedy and Greta) and we'll see a lot of improvement from the youth next season. Many minutes late in the season came from freshman (Jelenna, Sasha, Savannah, and Talia) and Taylor was only a sophomore.
Aleah returning, or not returning, will say a lot about how good this team will be next season, but the future is bright.

Taylor's long arms aren't a problem...they are a blessing. If you go straight up with your arms, the fouls don't come. We just played an elite team and program with athletes everywhere. They put pressure on you on defense and offense. Turning the ball over, and missing uncontested three pointers allow you to get further and further behind...our stretch from quarter one through three is a great example of this. We are young and talented, and will get reinforcements next year in Brown and Kampschroeder. If Aleah comes back, and Brown is healthy,it's going to be a fun 2021-22.

IMO our biggest issue has always been that when we face off against great athletic teams with quick ball hawking defenders we can’t handle it.
We just aren’t athletic enough to beat the top teams.
I love Aleah, she is smart, scrappy and an amazing leader. But she struggles against athletic defenders that pressure her. Syd was the same way.
I am hoping TVO can buck that trend in the future. She looks out of shape at times on the floor. I am hoping we can contribute they to being in high school a few months ago and not knowing what it like to be in D1 shape.
I love the future of this team. Greta will help and then 2022 I think Beers, Gardner will be the real deal. I just feel we still need an athletic point guard in the 2022 or 2023 class.

I honestly never believed we’d get this far based on everything that happened. It’s a testimony to the coaching staff and the grit of our team. If we can get into the second round with a 29 day hiatus and loss of two key players, I look forward to where we will go in the future. Go Beavs and go Georgia Bulldogs!
