Sales tax in Spokane Co. WA is 8.9%. FWIW (literally). No, the sales tax varies between 8.1-9.1%. The 8.9% is true for Cheney and Spokane. The sales tax is 6% in Idaho, which is less than 20 miles east of Spokane. Cheney is a solid 150 miles north of Milton-Freewater, which is the closest place to drive to be free from sales tax. Dude, EWU is in Cheney.

Washington has no personal state income tax. Now you know. So an 8.9% sales tax isn't so bad. The money to run the state has to come from somewhere. And Oregon has no sales tax. I always found it much easier to write off state income taxes on my federal return than state sales taxes on my federal return.

Some of these posts seem to be saying he shouldn’t take the UP job. Hey folks, it’s done. He has taken the job, apparently HE considers it a step up. And if you’ve ever been to Cheney, WA you might understand how a move to Portland, and a more prestigious conference for a BIG raise could be very appealing. [br I spose....portland sucks pretty hard though. I prefer the dry side though, for multiple reasons.

In fact there would hardly be an OSU as we know it without Portland students, Portland alumni, Portland donors, support from Portland industries and the Portland media market. Facts are facts and thousands upon thousands of OSU’s MOST loyal and generous supporters make Portland their home. The fact that every single fire hydrant in the city is painted orange and black (instead of red - or yellow) is no coincidence. If you don’t like PDX and think it “sucks”, that’s certainly your right but I’ll bet you my town does more to keep Oregon State University vital and prospering than your town does. By the way, I’ve got nothing against the “dry side”. I know it quite well.

Portland students? Not much of a campus there. I believe the students live in Corvallis. Or, they commute from Cheney, WA

Or, they commute from Cheney, WA I never considered any of the multiple towns I went to college in (including Corvallis) my “hometown” (btw it wasn’t Portland). In fact, I made a point of getting out of my hometown for college. “Corvallis students“ are the ones who stay in town with their families for Xmas break.

There's a lot more people in pdx, so by sheer numbers, more Beavs. I grew up in EO and married a gal from the wet side.....although she's a small town gal....we live on the wet side. Not sure for how long though. I get the urge to move every winter.....I don't like the dreary, wet winters over here....and Im no fan of the direction politics are taking us.....of course theres no room for meanigfull discourse, so again why I want get outta here....but I digress... I can see how someone would prefer pdx to rural, eastern washington....and if there athletic dept is having big issues, makes the decision easier I spose

I've lived the vast majority of my life west of the Cascades. The overcast damp gray season that stretches from October into June is not something you really ever "get used to" and I find the older I get, the more annoying it gets. On the positive side, I've never needed to have air conditioning in any residence I've lived in.
