When the team is hitting .239 in conference. It's never one thing... as in football offensive and defense feed off one another. When one or the other is struggling consistently it places pressure to perform to either out score or hold down an opponent. I think our pitching staff has the ability... but, it is apparent that some lack some key fundamentals and in stressful situations "steer" the ball, not trusting their mechanics. We have a bunch of throwers now... some have flashes of being "pitchers". But, the offensive side of the ball is just as bad. We are fundamentally weak. And it began very early on in the season with pitch selection, not getting opposing pitchers to go deep into the count/pitch count, and absolutely terrible execution of small ball. Again it is never one thing, but even with Drew healthy it just blurred how bad out pitching as a staff really is. We have some talented hitters, fundamentally sound physically, they are a mess mentally. With 3-0, 5-1 leads would it be easier to "hit"? Sure. With 4, 5, 6 runs on the board is it easier to pitch? Absolutely. Always intertwined. I don't see the lack of fundamental physical skills in our hitters as I do our pitching. If that makes sense in terms of complaints... but both suck! LOL

This is getting hard to watch. Might be time to just try rolling the Ball up there and trying not to get anyone hurt.

Exhibit A: 1st inning Exhibit B: 2nd inning This is a heinous display of baseball. Watched last nights game this morning, great pitching, and some hitting, this game, OMG, what a disaster, bad news bears. Sheez, PC must be numb by now with this team, holy cow, what a mess at times. Better find some pitching before next year or its deja vu, I dont' see anyone that can get anyone out consistently, Ras., who knows if he comes back or not, other than him, and that's a big ??there appears to be nada!! The pitching room is empty of quality.

We have one run in 8 in against SC! When was the last time we had over 5 runs in a Pac 12 game. We don't score runs unless the other team boots the ball around. Its been like this for 4years. Small ball/bunt ball era is over!

Actually, I think we scored in 2 out of the 18 innings so far this weekend, at one point we had scored in 1 inning out of 16!! Pathetic!! Maybe lightning strikes tomorrow and we score in TWO innings!!

This pitching and hitting both are not good. Except for the gem by Eckert last night the Beavers just haven't been pitching well at all. Too many walks setting up big innings just like todays game. When they throw a strike they throw the ball right over the plate and it gets whacked. Yes, not every time but at the worst times. Like after walking batters.
The batters are just bad at times. Todays starting pitcher for the Trojans had an era of 5.00 and an 4-8 record. Batting average against was .281 . Not good stats but the Beavers tend to make those pitchers look really good. The Beavers look lost at times. Pitches right over the plate are missed or are let go. What drives me nuts is runners in scoring position with less than two outs and the Beavers can't get any runs. First and Third, bases loaded, etc.
Now, I know they are trying but it just isn't happening. Has to be driving the coaches and players nuts. It has been a slow downward trend from the beginning of the season when the hits were coming in bunches. They didn't forget how to hit. They are just mentally fried. Whether is pressing or not, things just aren't falling in line.

I am pretty happy with Scotland Church, Bryce Fehmel ( as a starter ) and our Friday guy Eckert. I think we get some good strike throwing from these guys, but we need to be way more consistent at the plate. The strikeouts are alarming - especially looking at strike 3. Hopefully, next weekend is a huge sweep.

Fehmel has stepped up to become a very important ingredient. It's so necessary Each Season to add at least one freshman starter that can rise to the role of weekend starter. Regarding hitting it's the nature of high caliber D1 bb for Freshmen to struggle at the plate - with notable exceptions. I remember last year when Gretler became a replacement starter at 3rd when T-Mo went down and Hamilton slid over. Gretler, at the plate, was essentially an automatic out at best and a rally killer at worst. One year older, he's transformed. Our Freshman Class this year has had such widely varied success at bat - next year I'm confident the Sophmore class will provide monstrous results.
