I just watched Mclaughlin's highlight tape on a Oregon live show show type thing and boy was I impressed. I have Googled him and watched video on him many times but the mix tape they had on the slide show was one I have never seen and boy did it make him look good. My guess is its his final mix tape with his entire senior year where as everything before was sophomore or junior year and in my opinion his leap from Jr to Sr year was huge.
3 things really stood out to me:
1. The guy can play above the rim. I had not seen him doing all these dunks. I knew he was a good athlete and that he Dunked here or there in his Jr year tape . Sr year they were running alley oops to him and even when he would take it to the rack in Their set offense he rose above and dunked over guys. From my experience in see alot of fast break dunks and some oops but not much of taking it baseline and throwing down for the finish.
2. His ability to create his own shot is unreal. I can't think on a player in the last 20 years at osu that could create his own shots and can stroke like he can. We have not had a guy who we could give the ball to atop the key with 6 on the shot clock who had the ability to either get to the rack or do a step back jumper and drill it. Payton and Cunningham could get to the rack in those spots but they were never consistent threats to step back and hit the jumper. Nelson could hit the jumper but wasn't quick enough to get to the rack the way these other guys did.
3. How physically and mentally more prepared he looks then thompson did at the same age. I was so excited for the thompson/ Tinkle top 100 player in the country to show up and take over as a freshman. Thompson was way to physically weak and was a little one dimensional to start the year only hocking up 3s but he expanded his Game as time went on. Tres came in much more physically ready and I think will always be a great Robin but I just don't think his game translates to being the guy. I feel he will always be one of the guys which is absolutely fine and if he proves me wrong I'll be very happy. Mclaughlin already looks like a dude and plays with great composure. I think as a recruit he was a level above these guys but I think his 3 seperate commitments and his quite demeanor kiva held him back from blowing up the recruiting scene like I think he should have.
To sum it up I knew we were getting a great 4* recruit but now I truly think we are someone who will not just be a good player but will be a star for osu but the time he's done. I also think he will come in ready to go and not have near the adjustment issues Stevie had.
Check out this film. I think if you have only seen his junior year like myself you will be pretty impressed.
