My theory anyway based on what was said during the Selection Show yesterday and I quote:
Greg Gumbel from an obviously scripted text that was probably at least 24 hours old at the time: "Who will Tennessee meet? The #12 seed, Oregon State. The Beavers, picked last in the preseason poll, advanced to the conference title game."
No mention of the fact that our Beavs had actually won the title game which leads me to believe that we were already in based on just playing for the title.
A moot point now, but I thought this was very interesting.

No way we were getting in without winning the tourney. We finished 91 in the NET rankings.

I caught that too. Then when talking abou CU, he mentioned they made the PAC-12 title game and lost to OSU. The fact that UCLA is obviously a last 2-3 in would have made me nervous.
The best part is, no sweating on Selection Sunday because OSU is your 2021 PAC-12 Yournament Champions and AQ!(never get tired of hearing that)😀

Stanford didn't get a nod at 14-13 and 10-10, and it is probably iffy we do at a theoretical 16-13 if we lost against CU. Maybe, but a middling seed.

With the shrunken field, I think that Oregon State would have probably missed the cut with a loss. The Beavers and Cardinal both should have made the cut in a regular 32-team field.

The way the NIT selection process was set up this year, they could cherry pick - this was all about the big name schools and large population centers that missed out on the NCAA - places like OSU and Furd didn't have a snowball's chance.

Huh? From a market perspective, OSU would have been a more attractive pick than 90% of the teams that are in: www.ncaa.com/_flysystem/public-s3/files/2021-03/2021-nit-bracket.pdfStanford missed because they sucked after da Silva got hurt. They would have loved to have another major conference represented.

I thought I heard Barnhart say, when interviewed after the selections were announced, that Oregon State’s win at the Pac-12 Tournament knocked another “bubble” team out of the bracket because Oregon State was not slotted to receive an at-large selection.

I knew they were in because Walton kept saying so.
