While at Rice, he excelled at teaching rbs to run against the grain. At BYU he worked with backs to find the “Magic Spectacles” to see the holes open up. At Az he emphasized the offense snapping direct to the rb, but it soon became a fad that the defense could defend. Welcome, Coach!!

Coach Smith has made good hires so far. I'm confident this is another one.

Watch his video interviews...he seems like a very knowledgeable coach who can connect with young men. Coached at Rice for four years,so he probably has built up some solid Texas connections. That would be a huge boon for recruiting to add a few more Texans to our roster every year. Seems like a solid hire...

I don't know much about Steward. I would say that you do not always get the crème de la crème on February 22nd.

If he had Texas connections, it does not appear as if he retained them.

In addition to his time in Texas,he was at BYU which is a state we have gotten Omarion Fa'amoe from and in the juco ranks,Stephen Paea. The juco's in Utah have had some very good players in the past years who didn't go to Utah or BYU. Let's give this guy a chance to prove himself. We got one of our best recruiters from Montana St. in coach Pitre,so I trust Coach Smith did his homework on this. I think it's a great time to replace a coach...better than right before letter of intent day.

He coached at Rice university, and has connections in Houston, and his wife is from Dallas Texas. Maybe a pivot point for our staff to enhance our Texas recruiting to get a few more good ones out of a talent rich state.
