1961, or so I heard on the UNC-Virginia broadcast today. Affirmative: Yet UCLA would make the Final Four that 1961-62 season. John Wooden’s first of 12. They beat Oregon State in the Western regional final 88 to 69.

Yet UCLA would make the Final Four that 1961-62 season. John Wooden’s first of 12. They beat Oregon State in the Western regional final 88 to 69. UCLA led 11-7 and then went on a 26-7 run over the next seven minutes to lead 37-14 with nine minutes left in the first half. Oregon State went on 16-7 run to close out the half but never really threatened in the second half. The game was a hatchet job. The refs awarded the Bruins 19 more free throws and UCLA scored 21 more points from the charity stripe, which more than made up the difference. Terry Baker had a dreadful night, going 2/10 from the field, while battling foul trouble. Mel Counts finished with 24 points and 17 rebounds in the loss to lead all players on both teams in points and rebounds. Steve Pauly was the only other Beaver in double-figures. Pauly was a decathlete. He finished 13th in America in 1960. He won a gold medal at the American Championship in 1963 and competed in a duel meet against USSR at Lenin Stadium in the same year, finishing third behind two Russians. Pauly also was a football player but did not pursue the NBA or NFL, instead opting to concentrate on becoming a dentist and high school track and field coach. UCLA was led by John Green and two future Bruin head coaches in Gary Cunningham and Walt Hazzard. Hazzard was a future NBA All-Star. Cunningham and Green were on the cover of Sports Illustrated after the game with the title, "A Surprise Bid by UCLA's Bruins." UCLA had the second-worst record entering the Tournament and had never before played in a Final Four. The Beavers went to the Final Four the next year and the Bruins went to the Final Four 12 of the following 13 years.
