Despite the great start for Talia, and the hype on this board, my vote for Freshman player of the week for the three games this week goes to Sasha. Sasha had a terrific week. Saying that, you can't discount Talia skipping her senior season of High School and stepping right on a Pac12 court and proving she belongs. She hasn't had near the time Sasha has had in learning the program or playing with her teammates.
Wish the Beavs had won that OT game with Washington State......and the first game with Utah for that matter. Both games may haunt them in the end.
This team is still not that good, but I hope they prove me wrong in the weeks to come. SR said something after the game that I beleive is true. This team is beginning to understand itself. Certainly the remainder of this season is going to add a lot of value to next year.
Next season is way to difficult to predict because everybody could return, or some may quit or transfer out....for the Beavs, and every other Pac12 team. What we do know is the the Beavs are a young team that should show a lot of improvement from the youth from this year to next, and it will also add talent in the return of Kennedy and the addition of Greta. This team should be a top half of the Pac12 team next season, and I think Aleah returning is a key to the team being top 3-4.
IMHO, Aleah is being overly criticised on this board. She may not be perfect, but overall she is having a very good season. Anybody who pays close attention to the program must recognize her leadership off the court during a very difficult year to lead (Covid disruption). Very few TO's, 50% plus from 3, leading the team in scoring, while all the rest of the starters have not played together in the past (Taylor and Taya very limited).
The extra year of eligibility brings up many questions. Such as, what will Talia be considered next year? Will she be eligible for Freshman of the Week honors next season? I'm guessing no.
Enough from me....

Since it's "and other thoughts".
Adding our posts averages together they are producing 17 pts and 12 rebounds together. The only team close would be Stanford at 16 pts and 11 rebounds. Not bad.
Talia and Sasha are very different players in most ways, but it one way they are very similar. They have grit and they will get in there and do what's necessary to win. Savannah's got that Grrrr also. They all have that attitude about rebounds, now if they could spread that around a little....
This is a different team with Talia and beyond that it's playing a different way. We will find out how effective this really is when they play Arizona (if we get to play them).

On Aleah, I agree she is having a very good year. And I don't think she deserves any of the criticism of her play that is at issue, as I think she's being coached to do it. I do think SR deserves the criticism in how he's utilizing Aleah though. That said, he's a lot smarter about basketball than us yahooes, so it's mostly just something to talk about.

I think the way to look at this year, now and in the future, is to divide it into 2 sections - before Talia and after Talia. We all knew, after Destiny left, that point guard was going to be a huge problem for us, and it was. Now, with Talia in the game, overall ball movement is so much better than in the first 7 games. It's starting to look like what we've come to expect over the years, and it shows in the results - 3 & 4 without her, 3 & 1 with her.
Hopefully, we continue to build on that.
Somebody help me here. A box down below offers me the option to 'Reply with a GIF.' What the hell is a GIF?

I have to agree that SR has more basketball smarts than us yahoos! It was always going to be a difficult year, even before Covid, what with the changes in personnel and ongoing injuries, but the loss of the preseason games has delayed our progression and cohesion as a team. Yes, everyone else is playing under very similar constraints, I just think our system benefits more from the actual in-game experience than other programs that simply throw Blue Chips on the floor and try to outscore you.

I believe this year was a great year for several players in their first year playing time, ready for a long run in the tournament in the years to come. TVO,Goforth,Mitrovic, and Samuel all all talented first year players with varied skill sets. Add in Kampshroeder next year and bring back Brown and Goodman, and this is a very good start if everyone is healthy and our frosh class takes that typical next step. The future is bright, and I expect us capable of beating anyone on a given day....the kind of basketball we are used to seeing under Scott Rueck.

Brown should bring back more of an inherent desire to chase down boards, contest shots and defend more aggressively than what are seeing this year - that alone would be a big boost to this team-hopefully that will also rub off to her teammates with her return. Kampshroeder may also bring some of these same elements.

Speaking of other thoughts, remember last summer when 5" 4" PG Raina Perez enterend the transfer portal and I hoped she would choose the Beavs? She made a wise decision and chose #4 NC state who tonight knocked off #1 Louisville.

She made a wise decision and chose #4 NC state who tonight knocked off #1 Louisville. Perez had 15 pts and 3 assists. For Louisville, Van Lith had 6 points and 1 assist, and she averages 12 points and 2 assists. Not dominating in college like she did in high school. Perez is average 10 pts and almost 5 assists.

I’m still not sure why OSU didn’t go after Perez. She’s a great player and made a nice leap from mid major to a top-5 team.
Van Lith is more of an off-guard than point guard for Louisville right now. She doesn’t seem to have Talia’s court vision. Would’ve been interesting to see her in Rueck’s offense.

What I like about HVL is her defense. She does NOT like it when people score on her and tries very hard to make sure it doesn't happen.

From what I can tell, I think we could have a top 5 back court in college basketball over the next few years; IMO I am going to be really interested in seeing how close we get to that mark with the people we have.
