Don’t get me wrong, Jones is a very good post. But she is causing problems for the team. Currently she stays down by the basket and the team tries to pass her the ball in to her. Toward the end of last season and increasingly this year the other teams have realized that they can’t defend her one on one. So, they routinely double team her which causes several problems.
A-Jones is the Beav’s top offensive weapon, but she is not tall/strong enough to overpower a double team, so passes in to her tend to become turnovers and not points.
B-Also, if someone else shoots she’s trapped between two players and isn’t able to be very effective as a rebounder.
C-Because Jones is down there with two players defending her it negates Sasha’s superpower as a driver. There is too much congestion for Sasha to find a place to go and she gets blocked (as happened several times playing against Arizona).
I have come up with three ideas to deal with this. Please feel free to destroy them or comment.
1- With Jones double teamed there is someone open. Get the ball to that person and tell them to shoot. This seems obvious enough, but watching the Arizona game the Beav’s were so fixated on getting the ball in to Jones that the open person was basically ignored.
2- Jones said that she practiced her mid-range shot this past summer because the coaches asked her to. Get her away from the basket and have her shoot those mid-range shots. That will open up things for the team to drive to the basket.
3- Start Mitrovic. She is tall and big enough that double teams don’t have much effect on her and she has a range of hook shots and short jumpers that double teams can’t stop. Also, Mit is tall enough that if someone else shoots she can still effectively rebound. This option would be my last one as it kind of punishes Jones for her success.
Maybe SR will figure out another way, but this is the same problem he had with Gulich in the distant days of yor. In Gulich’s senior year Arizona State played her straight up two times and she beat them, and in the third game ASU double teamed or even triple teamed her at times and the Beav’s lost. In the tournament that year teams that tried to defend Gulich with their hot shot posts lost. And then the Beav’s ran into Louisville and in her first possession they had four players on Gulich and they pretty much kept that up for the rest of the game, and the Beav’s lost. So now SR has another post that is going to draw double coverage, he needs to figure out a work around instead of beating his head against that brick wall.
