Our NC SOS is 227. Next worse is Cal, at 164. Then Stanford at 127, Wazzu at 126, ASU at 115, Hole at 106, Washington at 98, Utah at 97, USC at 26, Arizona at 14, and UCLA at 9. It seems like it is this way almost every season. Why? It has to be hurting our RPI, which is super important when it comes to selection time. Just how bad is our non-conference SOS? According to my table, there are 42 D-1 schools that play baseball west of the Mississippi. 38 of those teams have a higher NC SOS than we do. The only ones that do not are Northern Colorado, Pacific, CS Northridge, and UC Irvine. Some of those who are ahead of us are real powerhouses, like Grand Canyon, Utah Valley, South Dakota State, New Mexico, and UNLV. We need to quit scheduling cupcakes to play in Surprise, and we need to get better quality teams to come to Goss. Horton took his team to Mississippi State this year. Why wouldn't somebody like LSU or South Carolina want to play us? If not at Goss, then we go to them.

Bottom line, the RPI rewards the population centers, as there are enough available teams to front load the equation. The food chain is too limited out west. And, apparently everyone we played and beat in our non conf is tanking?
We play Portland 2,3 times a year. It would help a ton if that program could find some sustained success. Gonzaga is consistently decent. Why don't we play them more? It does seem like we are missing on some opportunities, but I also question who has the sack to schedule us. Casey himself mentioned that teams don't want to play the Beavs. Understandable, but sucks for us. I believe PC would take the team to anyone decent who would play us. I would like to see a return trip from anyone we schedule though. I think I heard Parker mention someone who is advocating for a required amount of non conf games between the major conferences. Sadly, anything short of that and I think we will be in the same boat more years than not.

Let's not jump the gun here. I'm sorry we've been good, but we're not some juggernaut that everyone is afraid of.
There are many issues, most have to do with weather and costs. Zona is relatively cheap, we're the draw, and we get a deal to play there. It would be expensive as hell to travel to SEC or ACC country and play enough games to make the trip worth taking.
Most of the quality teams out west are in the Pac 12. High quality teams from the southeast or southwest are not travelling to Corvallis to play games in February, March in the cold and rain. It's why were in Zona and San Diego.
If PC wanted big opponents he'd have to travel and burn his budget. Why? Win the Pac 12 you host a regional, maybe a Super, and go from there.
Can we schedule a little better? Sure. But, our former opponents could also win a little more lol. The NC SOS is not going to hurt this team. Win the Pac 12, host. Finish 2,3,4 you're a 2 or 3 seed on the road.

The problem is that the Beavers finished with 28 wins and out of the tournament. In 2009, Oregon State played Tennessee in Tennessee and one of the games got rained out, which was expensive for a moderate bump in NC SOS. Despite the poor non-conference SOS, non-conference RPI is still 34. What has really held the Beavers back this year is a poor conference record.

In a pregame interview a couple of weeks ago PC discussed RPI and mentioned that we've ABSOLUTELY tried to schedule games with both ACC and SEC schools in recent seasons, he even referenced that we had gone out that way in the past and are more than willing to do it again. The problem? They don't want to play us.
LSU non conference home opponents: Cincinnati, Sac State, Fordham, Ball State Georgia non conference home opponents: GA Southern, Wright State, Lipscomb, Charleston Southern Virginia non conference home opponents: ECU, Monmouth, Wagner, Wiliam & Mary, VMI
See a trend there?
IMO - don't lose a series to teams like WSU, don't get swept by Cal and we're not nearly as worried about SOS/RPI.

What? Playing UO, OOC doesn't put the SOS in the top ten? Sacrilege and blasphemy, I say.
