Utah and Washington are knotted at the top of the Pac-12 with Oregon State one game back. Arizona is a half game behind Oregon State in fourth.
Oregon State visits Arizona. Utah visits Washington State. Washington visits USC.
Oregon State currently holds the tiebreakers over both Utah and Washington. At least two wins against Arizona would also give the Beavers the tiebreaker over the Wildcats.
14 or 15 games left. The Portland rainout has never been rescheduled. The Pilots would have room for it, if they fail to finish in the top four of the West Coast Conference, which looks likely, as Portland is in the cellar. If the game is made up, it will likely be between the UCLA and USC series.
To feel good about their hosting chances, the Beavers really need to get to 38 wins and win the Pac-12. Last year, Oregon State missed out with 38 wins and a tie and no Pac-12 championship. If the Beavers fail to win the Pac-12, they need to at least get to 39 wins.
As far as polls:
CBN: 15
Baseball America: 17
NCBWA: 12
USA Today: 13
Perfect Game: 11
Washington leap-frogged Oregon State into 14 in the CBN, despite the Beavers having a better overall record and a series win, but the Huskies are on top of the Pac-12, so....Baseball America has Oregon State on the outside of the top 16, looking in.
Typically, the west gets at least three regionals. The problem is that the RPIs out west are low this year at the top. UC Santa Barbara would normally host but cannot, because their stadium does not meet minimal host standards. They also cannot host at their first alternate stadium, because of a conflict at Lake Elsinore. UC Santa Barbara may figure out another fix, but I have not heard about it yet. Baseball America does not seem to want to give them a host spot, so there probably is no realistic workaround currently being discussed.
The committee may ship UC Santa Barbara out west as a two. Having said that, the only two teams that really look like host material out west right now are Arizona and Washington. Washington, leading the Pac-12, seems like a natural pick. Arizona as a two would be a good pick to pair with UC Santa Barbara. No one else out west has done enough this year to warrant a regional at this juncture.
Breaking down Baseball America's regional projections, the SEC has five host spots (which is the unofficial, official conference maximum). The ACC has four. The Big Twelve and Conference USA each has two. The other three host spots went to Coastal Carolina, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Minnesota. Oregon State, notably, beat Minnesota 8-7 on a neutral field early in the season. If the Beavers can get its RPI to within 10 of the Gophers, Oregon State should get a host spot over Minnesota. The Gophers represent the Beavers' highest RPI win to date.
