For 20-21 or 21-22? Are we still looking to recruit a position of need? I haven't heard? Anyone know?

For 20-21 or 21-22? Are we still looking to recruit a position of need? I haven't heard? Anyone know? We have 13 players this year - Aleah, Taya, Jasmine, Andrea, Kennedy, Taylor, Ellie, Jovanna, Jelena, Noelle, Ana, Sasha, and Savannah. I don't know that Noelle was given a scholarship; I don't know that she wasn't. As far as I know, all those players are allowed to come back next year, and would then be joined by Greta and Talia. If Noelle has a scholarship, that's 15 and we're maxed out. We have room for one if Noelle is not on scholarship. For 2022, Aleah, Ellie, Jovanna, and (I would think) Andrea would be gone, and we have 2 commits already. So we still have room for 2 or 3, depending on Noelle's status. I would think we'd be looking for a point guard above all other things.

Only the coaches would know this, but I suspect some players will be ready to move on even with another year granted. Mack and Subasic seem most likely, but who knows. Ironically, the extra year grant ends up hurting the number of available scholarships to the 21/22 classes - I expect we'll see a loaded transfer portal in a couple years.

Everyone thinks from a fan perspective that players are automatically going to stick around. Most coaches who have discussed this don’t see it being the case. More will leave than stick around.

It just way to early to know what Aleah, Jovanna, and Ellie do next year. This year has to play out, and with Covid, it could be a shortened season which could leave some of the players wanting more college ball (and more educational opportunities).

True, anything on this board right now is strictly speculative, with absolutely no basis in fact - so I'll do some factless speculation! I think the grad transfers came here for 2 primary reasons: They wanted to play for a top 10 program, and they wanted the experience of playing home games at a place like Gill. Unfortunately, they're not going get that experience this year. My guess would be that, if the opportunity exists, all 3 listed above will choose to stay another year, complete the Master's degree, and be a part of a dynamite team next year. Only time will tell.

Well, Joanna has already experienced playing in front of fans at Gill, just with the wrong team. Ellie has also played in front of some big crowds, including over 10K at Iowa State. But I agree, that was likely a motivating factor. From my own personal experience, I was getting real sick of being poor as a college student, and ready to start my career ASAP. I didn't have another year of collegiate sports dangled in front of me, but I won't be surprised if some get the urge to move on (especially when so far from home).

The women are in a far different situation than the male athletes. Rueck recruits smart, highly motivated women and they are far more oriented towards the degree and post grad work than the men . Also, there is a vast difference in the financial rewards of men vs the women , and in women's pro basketball , there seems to be a 'standard' bias for the female athletes that makes it even tougher to break into that level. Forgetting the potential to turn pro, this then becomes a very personal decision about what makes sense. The current COVID 'rules' represent a rare ( we hope ) opportunity to get that advanced degree and to fine tune your game rather than just going out into the work force . The current environment isn't exactly the best for getting a job you love and can fully enjoy . All of this can and will change, but this next year will still present huge challenges for '20 and '21 grads is not very promising ! School was tough , but, I personally would have jumped at the chance to get the advanced degree on scholarship money. Your toughest year is your Freshman year and after that things are a lot more interesting and easier to navigate . JMO

JMO Question remains "if" there will be scholarship money available for the 4-year group of Aleah, Taya, Jovana, and our grad transfer Ellie?
