The Oregon State Beavers entered the week with three scholarships available after the departure of point guard Derrick Bruce.
But that number dropped to two Wednesday morning, as Tyler Junior College (Texas) guard Ronnie Stacy committed to Oregon State over Memphis and interest from programs in the Big Ten and Big 12.
For Stacy, one of the biggest factors was the environment around the Oregon State basketball program.
"He really loved the kids on the team," Tyler coach Mike Marquis said. "He was very, very impressed, but it was easy to see an opportunity and he was excited about that. Of course, the campus, the town and the community were great. Like all kids, he wants to go in with a real shot at earning minutes."
The 6-foot-4 guard, originally from Benjamin Russell High School (Alexander City, Alabama), averaged 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game as a senior, according to alexcityoutlook.com, before going the junior college route.
"He has tremendous upside, and I think Ronnie is going to be a better player in college than he was in high school," Benjamin Russell High School coach Jeff Hines told the Alexcity Outlook. "When you get to the next level, you can devote hours upon hours toward honing your skill and perfecting your craft."
