Foot injury held her out last year? Hoping to be cleared to play this year?
I really hope it is true.

Good to hear that things have been good for her here at OSU. Sorry to read that her mom is struggling. She's practicing with the team in the photo's so here's to hoping she gets to play!

I knew her story from arriving in New Jersey and forward to Ribet Academy , never all this background before that. It's heart breaking, but how she has turned out is so impressive, we're lucky to have her, playing or not. I was fortunate to make a connection via Facebook to whomever answered messages on the Ribet Facebook page, and followed as close as possible her senior year. She didn't get to play at first because of CA transfer rules. She joined a team with a strong veteran "center", Lola Pendande , now at Utah. So they didn't need her bad enough to play her that much, as hard as that is to believe. One of the parents did videos of their games and put on their Facebook page, live. I wasn't clever enough back then to capture them, kicking myself now. I will dig for them and pass on if found

Wow, she's got grit. How many 16 year olds would have put up with being isolated in a foreign country/language, passed around homes underfed and unwanted, and not pulled the ripcord of going back home (or not even confided the situation to your loved ones)?
I'm still very reticent to get my hopes up of seeing her on the court just yet, but I can see why she's so inspirational to the team; she's a winner at life.

I'm waiting for someone on the coaching staff to weigh in on this article. I hope I'm wrong, but I sense way too much second rate journalism in this piece....
Aquino sat out last season because of a foot injury!!! Doesn't sound like anything anyone in the program has said, or even suggested. Aquino is hoping to be cleared this season??!! Hoping on what basis? A one in a million dream? Or is she hoping because she has had encouraging news from someone on the medical staff? Journalists are supposed to provide info as to whether "hoping" is a lottery long shot, or whether it's realistic.
She wrote an interesting story about AA's struggles and hardships, and she nicely highlighted AA's perseverance and strength of character. But she totally flubbed the part of the story that most relates to AA's immediate basketball future.
Like I say, I'm waiting to hear what someone on the coaching staff has to say.....
As you all know, I'm a dedicated OSU WBB fan - and I will be for a long time. I'm hoping for the best for AA, and I'd love to see her on the court this year. But if you're encouraged to think AA will play the season because of what is written in this article, you might be sorely disappointed. GO BEAVS!!

The article says "she hopes to be cleared" - as in, this is her hope, nothing to do with what the odds or medical opinions are on that. Additionally, she may very well want the foot injury to be the story of last year's reason as well - that's up to her; I do recall seeing her wrapped, but not thinking that was the issue. There are certainly foot issues that can wreck a whole season. Given the scope of the article, I doubt OSU coaches weigh in at all, particularly given that it's her story that she finally wanted to open up about, much of which happened well before OSU was in the picture. Regardless this is a human interest piece, not a sports injury blog - and so that's all I read out of it.

Doubt we ever see the coaching staff comment on her status except to say its status quo. Hippa prevents comment on her medical situation unless she comments on it.

It's a human interest piece - for sure. But that's not all it is.... It talks about AA's hopes for the season, and her hopes to be cleared to play.....Any reporter worth a dime would ask her what her hope is based on. She's not writing for Seventeen, or some feel good fluff magazine. She's a writer for a sports publication that specializes in sports news and sports information.
It's not the end of the world, but it's second-rate writing and it should be pointed out for what it is. GO BEAVS!!
