Succumbs to pancreatic cancer. Meanest pitcher in history of the game. One year he won over 20 games with a 1.12 ERA, One guy said he pitched with pure hate and would knock his grandmother down if she looked too comfortable. Cy Young, MVP, World Series MVP HOF, restrautuer, MLB coach, broadcaster, played year for the Harlem Globetrotters. An all time great.

Father died of TB before he was born; Suffered from childhood rickets; Did not sign out of high school but went to Creighton and played 4 seasons followed by a season with the Globetrotters before beginning his pro baseball career. Dominated MLB so completely that they changed the rules to give the offense a better chance, lowering the pitchers mound from 15” to 10” following the 1968 season. www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gibsobo01.shtml

Rough couple of weeks. First Tom Seaver, now Gibby. Fist fight in heaven between those two for the #1 spot in the rotation. Also sweet Lou Johnson passed last week. Hit a big HR in the 7th game of the 65 World Series for the Dodgers and also scored the only run in sandy Koufax’s perfect game.

My money is on Gibby. Drysdale waiting to lay the sidearm on the guy unlucky enough to be the winner. I remember Drysdale on the intentional walk. Why waste 3 pitches. Just drill him with the first one.

Don Drysdale might be one of the worst pitchers in the HOF. Only two 20-game seasons. Only .557 winning percentage. Losing record last four years of his career. He definitely benefitted from his association with Koufax. Hall of Very Good, but not HOF. Other's mileage may vary.

I had dinner and drinks at his bar/restaurant in Kona in January 1991 (give or take). He was not there but I think the staff said he was there a lot in the winter months.

Maybe, except that Namath gave the AFL it's first real national star, legitimized the league, and his huge signing bonus helped lead directly to the merger. As someone of the AFL era, it's impossible to underestimate Namath's impact on culture and on the leagues. He's in the HOF for both, much like Jackie Robinson, in the HOF for his playing ability (very good for only 4-5 years, because of his late start in MLB) and his off-the-field impact on the game. Like many my age, I loved Joe Namath.

Canseco too, for bringing the steroid problem to light. Oh, and his fielding.

Many are in the HOF for their contributions to FB in addition to their actual exploits on the field. The signing of Joe Namath led the the AFL's first major TV contract. His play and fame legitimized the league, leading to the merger. He led the first AFL team to win the Super Bowl. He was a cultural icon of millions. He certainly belongs in the HOF. Curt Flood did not change the game. He lost his lawsuit. He only started to set in motion the process that finally ended the reserve clause. Marvin Miller, OTOH, should have been in the HOF at least a decade before he was inducted.

He’s a cultural icon and not for wearing panty hose.
