The Beavers make a late addition to the 2021 recruiting class with a pledge from Dominic Hambley, bringing the class total to 16 commitments. Hambley is a 6'2", 225 pound RHP that attends the Belmont Secondary School in Langford, a suburb of Victoria, British Columbia.
He carries a 3.9 GPA.
Dominic plays summer ball for the Victoria Mariners in the B.C. Premier League. He has emerged as a prospect of interest in Canada with one scout calling him, "the most intriguing arm in Canada". Hambley has a big, strong body (he cleans 116 Kilos), terrific arm and is an imposing figure at 17 years of age. He goes right after hitters with a 3 pitch mix. At The Canada 12 games in Toronto featuring all 12 Select Province Teams, he was dominant averaging 2 K's per inning in his starts.
Hambley throws a 4-seam fastball, sitting on 93-94 and cranking it up to 95 when needed. Scouts are taken by his 12-6 shaped curve ball that spins at 2,570 RPM with a hard biting action. That is the MLB average for spin rate and scouts see it with "plus" potential. His change up is a work in progress and he wants to be more consistent (better command) with both the curve and change. He tends to be a little wild at times - same thing I read in Will Frisch's scouting reports.
Hambley has a powerful arm with eye-catching arm speed. Has a simple "rock and fire" delivery with a fast but even tempo, and throws hard. Considerable effort is obvious.
Dominic has increased his velocity 7 mph in just a little over one year. They say there is much more in the tank. Where does Coach Dorman project him? In 3 years at OSU, 100? Hambley is now included in our National rankings at # 382. Prep BB Report says he is the # 2 player in British Columbia.
He has caught and played 3B. He has pop in his bat with an exit velo of 97 mph. He'll start on the hill for OSU. There is opportunity there for improved mechanics and polished pitches.
Dominic Handley joins RH Jacob Kmatz (92 mph in 2019), RH Cole Nelson, LH David Case, and RH Victor Quinn (touches 95 mph) as the 5th pitcher in the 2021 class. The class stands at 16, but the possibility of Tyree Reed and Malakhi Knight wearing a Beaver uniform is dimming. Reed is on everyone's top-5 first round list and Knight has blown up on the tournament circuit this summer - great athleticism, plus speed and hitting 350' home runs. Baseball America has both Reed and Knight Top-50 in the 2021 MLB draft.
Go Beavs !
