RIP. He put 'zona basketball on a WHOLE other level. we should have gone after him hard after Ralph retired. You're kidding right? Ralph retired after the 1988-89 season. Lute had already been at UA for 6 seasons and won 3 Pac-10 championships and made one Final Four. Lute’s UA record against Ralph was 12-2. We had no, none, zero, nada, chance of prying him out of Tucson. To think that was ever a feasible option is either ignorant of history or outright delusional. But thanks for the chuckle.

Unless you weren't alive then, we were a top program UA was still WIP. The course we chose of has been great though.... A "WIP" that had just gone to the Final Four, won 3 conference championships in 6 years and thrashed "top program" OSU 12 times out of 14. Some work-in-progress.. I certainly was alive then. That's what makes your post so amusing.

All you A-hole posters might be wrong, whether ftd’s premise is right or not. Maybe we should have gone after him hard. For all the reasons posted why we shouldn’t. He was totally the hot up and coming coach. Owned us. I hated him! So why not try to hire him? Because OSU didn’t then, and still doesn’t think big in regards to sports. Just hire the assistant to replace a legend. Play it safe. Worst thing that can happen is they say no. Takes money and balls.

He wasn’t leaving UA regardless of how “hard” we would have gone after him. He was exactly where he wanted to be in Tucson. To suggest that he was OSUs replacement for Ralph Miller if we had just decided to pursue him is as I mentioned above either ignorant of history or outright delusional. As far as A-hole posters go. TOTKO.

He was basically the only opposing coach that I remember from that era. Mostly because he was good and had talented players who matched up well against us. One of my favorite moments in Gill was hollering out with thousands of my closest friends: "Sit down, Lute! Sit down, Lute!"
UA vs. OSU was always a great game! Thanks for the memories, Lute!
