We lost Jacob Kizer to UW last year too, but I'm really surprised Tuipulotu didn't choose UO. I think his decision likely has something to do with his high school coach. As I recall, the BSU QB a few years back (Grant Hedstrom or something, played against us in the Hawaii Bowl) was from Independence and I thought his dad might have been one of the HS coaches. Maybe I'm wrong. If I'm not, it wouldn't surprise me to see him steering guys toward Peterson after his son played for Peterson.
Wait, maybe it was Mannion's dad who was the high school coach at Independence? Now I'm questioning everything...
Honestly, I just think this is the wrong time for Marlon to come along. If he were five years ago or three years in the future we'd likely be in much better position to make a real run at him. It's kind of a bummer regarding all the Oregon high school recruits right now. The state seems to be richer in high level talent than ever before and we happen to be at our 20 year low. Timing is everything and we might be missing the boat on all of the top 9 or 10 guys in this class. If the staff were somehow able to pull a real recruiting coup and land 5 or 6 of the top in state guys this year, it could be the kind of thing that could set up our program to really build for the future. There are four linemen in this class who are Pac 12 caliber and all are coached by a Beaver alum in Alex Linnenkohl, yet from what I've heard, I'm not sure any of the four are truly considering the Beavs. If we miss on Oregon in this class, it will be imperative to land the kid out of Lake Oswego and the kid out of Crescent Valley in the 2018 class.

The last name is Hedrick and there is a connection to Tuipulotu at Independence. I do not know the details. Missing on Kizer may have had more to do with recruiting timing. As you can see they did not take a single tight end in the class last year. They did have a gray shirt commit for a while, but he eventually went with an immediate offer with Boise State. I think the coaching staff really liked Kizer, but may have not pushed real hard for him due to trouble finding a scholarship for a tight end.

Correct, Hedrick is the HC at Central, his son played for Peterson at Boise. So I could certainly see that angle...
One would think we have the inside track for Hafaunga, given that he knows the program well, his coach was a Beav, brother played here and we have a pretty good number of poly kids on the roster (one of his assistants thinks that that will be a strong factor). He's going to be a very good safety. I think that's his calling. Good kid, good family...

Talked to an AD in the valley league who said OSU appeared to have dropped the ball with this kid. No specifics but it sounds like for whatever reason they didn't make a very big push for him. Also of note, I heard that Talanoa and he are cousins. Be interesting to see if that becomes a factor down the line.
