The Cardinal have dropped 11 “minor sports “ due to the budget crisis caused by Covid. I think it was bob Dylan who said the times they are a changin and 20 support staff positions. looking at a $25 million hole this year and $70M over the next 3... Big oof. on the other hand, the Stanford endowment sits at roughly $27.7 billion right now. Is COVID the cause? or the excuse...

Big oof. on the other hand, the Stanford endowment sits at roughly $27.7 billion right now. Is COVID the cause? or the excuse... To further expound on my point, Stanford uses 5% of their endowment on an annual basis to cover roughly 20-25% share of it's operating expenses. the rest is covered by tuition and fees and other revenue (medical center being a big on too). Stanford could over this budget hole by pulling 5.1% of their endowment next year... That is kind of my point. Yes, $25M hole is big, yeah COVID is causing a lot of problems, but if Stanford really wanted to weather the storm, it is absolutely trivial for them to cover the hole. So... again, is it really COVID?

So starting in the fall of 2021 only 2 actual pac-12 teams wrestle? Would not surprise me if the pac-12 drops wrestling.

Would not surprise me if the pac-12 drops wrestling. that would also allow us to drop a women's sport (title IX thing) and save a few more bucks... [br Us? I don't see OSU dropping wrestling short of the pandemic mutating and getting 10 times worse

Is there a minimum number of varsity sports a university has to have to be considered D1?

D-I schools Schools must field teams in at least seven sports for men and seven for women or six for men and eight for women, with at least two team sports for each gender. Teams that include both men and women are counted as men's sports for the purposes of sponsorship counting.

We literally just hired a new coach with new assistants for wrestling. We having a wrestling center for them. It would be devastating for the entire state if OSU drops their wrestling program. Stanford low-key is not a sports school. Made sense if they wanted to find excuses to drop sports. A lot of the athletes are saying online that Stanford told me them the decision was final and nothing can reverse it. Which seems awfully big Stanford's situation.

And despite their “low-key” approach, Stanford wrestling won the PAC-12 in 2019.

Stanford released an FAQ that stated that the decision was final and any "save wrestling" fundraising would go to club level wrestling.
