at the end of 20-21 seasons, including wrestling...wow.
Nate Engle got out at the right time. He is our recruiter...queue up the calls to Shane Griffith, Real Woods.
"Stanford will discontinue 11 of our varsity sports programs at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year: men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, co-ed and women’s sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men’s volleyball and wrestling."

What does this mean for the future of the conference? Only 5 teams left, correct? Merge with the Big 12?

Wow, I thought I'd read somewhere that all of Stanford's wrestling scholarships were endowed. I must have heard wrong. Lots of dominoes here, but sounds to me like the end of "Pac-12 wrestling". You can't really have a championship with only 2 of the full members running programs. Assuming that ASU and OSU continue, I wonder whether the Big-12 would be interested in taking us on, like they did Fresno State wrestling. big12sports.com/tournaments/?id=764&path=wrestlingIt'd be a fun conference to wrestle in. That would result in OSU men only participating in 6 Pac-12 championship sports. I hope that's not a problem from a membership standpoint.

Wow. Just awful news.

Was hoping there was a glimmer of hope in rescuing wrestling given that they are competing through 2021 but then I saw this in the FAQ: 6. If donors step forward, can any of these sports retain their varsity status? The decisions to reduce our sports offerings are final, and any future philanthropic interest in these sports may be directed towards supporting them at the club level, should they establish as a club sport after their 2020-21 varsity campaign. While Stanford Athletics has many tremendously generous donors, their support simply could not cover the escalating costs of ensuring excellence across the board in our 36-sport model.

That's extremely heartbreaking for the Stanford program. And makes you wonder if Stanford really just wanted to find a way to get rid of these sports.
Also makes me wonder if some of the recruits we lost to them will come out this way. We are the only main P-12 school with wrestling in the Pacific.

College sports will look much different post covid...expenses have gotten way out of hand. Colleges needed a reset...

I don’t think Stanford really wants to delete these sports. After all, Stanford is #2 in all universities in producing Olympic medal winners, and I am sure most of them were not on the football team. These smaller sports are important for developing our Olympians, and Stanford has been able to be one of the leaders in this.

Real Woods has entered the transfer portal... 41-2 record in his first 2 seasons.

Real Woods has entered the transfer portal... 41-2 record in his first 2 seasons. It will be interesting to see where he ends up. He is from Illinois. He made his Pac-12 win over our Grant Willits look easy. He will be a solid pick up for who ever gets him.

I think Griffith is from NJ, so could certainly see him end up at Rutgers or Penn State. Jaden Abas would be the other big catch - and he's from Rancho Bernardo. Roseburg's Haydn Maley just finished his RS Soph season as well. Probably watched him wrestle 30 times in HS as it seems we were always in the same tournaments as Roseburg for a couple years and they were loaded.

Yes it will be interesting to see who else chooses the portal route. We could use Griffith right away...but what team in the nation couldn't? haha Maley makes the most sense. He probably could take out all of our 285's currently on the roster.

I was told Maley's walk up music at Stanford home meets was "Country Boy Can Survive". Just for that reason alone I hope he finishes his eligibility in his home state.
