In my judgment, a remarkable group of pitching prospects assembled by our recruiting coordinator with help from the staff.
Because of the Pandemic, these pitchers were inactive this spring in what would have been their Sophomore year in high school, but several have participated in approved select events this summer. The Beavs currently have 5 pitchers committed and all of them can pump some gas for 16 year olds. Lets touch em all.
RHP Daniel Macias: (6'1", 177) Denver/ Regis Jesuit HS. Might be the best SS in Colorado besides being a standout pitching prospect. In 2019 as a freshman, Daniel threw an 86-87 mph fastball with consistently good late movement. Has 3 pitches with a good curve ball and and sinking change-up. He should see more growth and more velo before setting foot on campus in 2 years. Ranked the #2 overall prospect in Colorado.
RHP Connor Pote: (6'6", 196) Sherwood Park, Alberta/ Archbishop Jordan HS. Plays basketball in the winter for his HS team, plays baseball in the summer for Okotocs Baseball Academy . Seasoned pitcher for the Okotoks Dawgs age group teams. Last year with the Okotoks 15u team, he camped on 86-87 with two quality secondary pitches, the bender and the straight change. Connor's frame will continue filling out and more velo will come with that over the next two years. A high ceiling guy that has had excellent coaching. The top 2022 prospect in Alberta Province and one of the best in Canada.
RHP Isaac Hill: (6'1", 186) Grants Pass, OR./ Hidden Valley HS. The top ranked player in Oregon's class of '22. Isaac has a lively 89-90 mph fastball that he complements with two good secondary pitches. Isaac has a big upside with more growth potential and strength coming. Projects with low 90's fastball by the time he sets foot in Corvallis. High % of K's in his outings.
RHP Tyler Gough: (6'1", 184) Perris, CA. / Heritage HS. Has a 3 pitch mix but at 16, sits on a 90-91 mph fastball that he locates consistently. His "set-apart" is a filthy slider that with a bit more consistency can be a + pitch. His change of pace is also very effective. Recently at the 16 and under Perfect Game West World Series at Surprise, AZ, he touched 93 several times in a 3 inning appearance. He's ranked #6 and #7 in California. MLB Draft is a concern here.
RHP Ian Ritchie (6'2", 179) Bainbridge Island, WA. HS. Shades of Mick Abel here. The top ranked player in Washington and simiar to Abel with the #13 national ranking with Perfect Game last year. During his 2019 high school season, Ian cruised at 90-92 with a running fastball that jams RH hitters. He adds a slider, curve and change up. Mature, poised and wipe out stuff. Scouts have reported 94 mph velo in workouts this spring. Two years away from the draft, buts scouts are following closely.
These 5 pitching prospects could constitute one of the best group of pitchers ever assembled in one class (we've had some really good ones). Exciting to think about in these difficult times of 2020.
