A quick review of the MLB Draft signings to date is revealing - the teams are not in a mood of generosity. Some incredible signings with players valued at $500k to $1m, signing for a paltry $10-20,000.00. Parsimony rules in Chamberlain's 4th and 5th round neighborhood. It shouldn't surprise us to see him back in Beaver gear next year.
The two biggest winners I caught, were 4th year Junior Texas pitcher Bryce Elder, who had a $336 slot value but signed for $850,000, and Central Catholic lefty, Dylan MacLean who was the 115th player selected, the 15th in the 4th round which carried a $502,360.00 slot value.
The Texas Rangers paid Dylan $1,200,000 for his signature.
Only fitting that if we lose our top recruit (Abel) to pro ball, Lindsey Meggs should lose his top recruit (MacLean) to pro ball.

What are the Odds both Abel and Chamberlain don't get Slot Value? Have been wondering why Abel hasn't already signed.

A quick check on Christian tonight - he hasn't signed. He has a couple of weeks to sign as I recall so there should be ample time to negotiate the various parts of the contract. I plan on monitoring his situation because players drafted in his 4th round neighborhood are experiencing some real volatility in offers from the clubs.
The two pitchers I mentioned, Elder from Texas and Dylan MacLean have been joined by ASU infielder Gage Workman as "Bank Busters" in this draft. Workman's slot was $574,400 and he signed for $1,000,000.
Two high school players commanded above slot money, with New York City pitcher Alex Santos bumping his $870,700 slot to $1.25 mil with the Astros, and Sam Infante, a HS shortstop from Monsignor Pace in Miami, signed for $1,000,000 beating his $884,100 slot with the Nationals.
On the "Bargain Basement" side, the White Sox are showing the way. With their 83rd pick in the draft, they signed a $783,100 slot for $50,000. They also signed a $517,400 slot for $10,000. The Mets signed the #91 pick with a slot value of $647,300 for $20,000.
Of the 34 signings to date, only a few have signed for more than their slot value. Signings by rounds are 2 in the first round, 1 in the Comp Round, 4 in the second round, 3 in the CB round, and 8 in each of the third, fourth and fifth rounds. In the first round of 29 picks, only the 25th and 27th picks have signed.
More surprises ahead.

Why would someone sign for $20k when the slot value is over 500k? Did the Mets not want to spend any money and made a prior agreement with someone not going to be picked in the first five rounds? Is there other compensation ie the kid will be taken care of another way?

Is there other compensation ie the kid will be taken care of another way? They certainly told the kid they'd draft him in that slot only if he'd sign for a MAJOR discount. If he wouldn't agree, they would just find someone else who would. With such a truncated draft this year, the kid surely felt it was better to be drafted and sign for $20K than go the Free Agent route and hope. Typically, the signing amount is a closer approximation to talent level than the actual draft position, so the slot $$ can be totally irrelevant depending on what the team is trying to accomplish with its draft.

What are the Odds both Abel and Chamberlain don't get Slot Value? Have been wondering why Abel hasn't already signed. The Phillies just signed Carson Ragsdale and Baron Radcliff to below-slot contracts. That gives them $5,119,200.00 to sign Mick Abel and Arkansas' Casey Martin. (Martin is listed as a shortstop but played 3B for Arkansas in 2018. He scored the tying run in game 2 before grounding into a double-play to end the game. He had the final hit against Kevin Abel in game 3 to load the bases. He struck out to begin the ninth in game 3. He was charged with two errors: the first leading to the double play on the safety/suicide squeeze in game 2 and the second a hard luck "error" that should have probably been a base hit that allowed Larnach to score and put Oregon State up 2-0 in game 5.) Martin is known to have signed, but it is unclear what he signed for at the moment. It appears that the Phillies are trying to put together a big number for Mick. Reading the tea leaves about how the negotiations are going, the Phillies have signed 10 undrafted pitchers to free agent contracts. There's always a chance, even it is one-in-a-million.

Quality pitchers are way more valuable than most infielders - this sounds really promising for Mick, unless the Phillies are not wanting to waste any money on players that aren't going to see the field even in the minors this year. That is probably why so many guys are signing at garage sale prices. My personal bet is that their agents might be holding back a bit and watching the pro negotiations. No partial season, no money to offer, no need to sign for peanuts when they can go back with a redshirt year extension and hopefully more bargaining power next year.

It has been 14 days since Mick Abel was drafted and 13 days since Christian heard his name called. I believe I read July 11th as the deadline date for signing. Way too early to read anything into the signing issue.
Some signings occur in the final hours before the deadline.
