Sweden, population 10 million, had their head infectious disease specialist convince the leaders that lockdowns weren't needed. Safe distancing would be enough and a developed herd immunity would do the rest.
Well now they have suffered 4500 deaths and counting. That's 450 people per million population. By contrast, the USA has had 320 deaths per million in a nation full of inconsistent lockdown efforts.
Oregon, which had a hard lockdown, evil lefty commie plot that it was, has had 36 deaths per million.

Many western European countries have about the same or higher death rate as Sweden. Some closed early. Some(UK, Ireland) delayed.
The Oregon stats look excellent. The current, big spike is pretty much totally unrelated to the reopening of Oregon. This spike would have happened in Phase I, II, or III. I am hoping there isn't an overreaction.

If people don't work and pay taxes, medical costs don't get covered. I saw some interviews of Swedish people and they basically acknowledged that fact and accepted the risk of not shutting down the economy, and hence their medical system.

The current spike is due to more testing and contact tracing - ie the cases were missed before due to lack of tests and contact tracing. Also there is a huge (145 cases or so) outbreak at a seafood packing plant in Newport - might hang back from that area for a bit.

And, around 58% of non elderly Americans have employer based health care insurance. No job...... no insurance. This virus is a double edged sword. Be safe, be well.

the Washington Post is reporting a study done at Cal Berkeley that concluded that the shutdowns probably stopped 60 million new cases in the US and 285 million in China. The article also reports that a study out of Imperial College London saved over 3 million European lives and 500,000 in the UK alone.

It is a very real spike. Essential workers, and they are essential, in an essential aspect of the Oregon economy are the spike. Seasonal, migrant workers are vital to the Oregon economy. Many are family groups who have worked on the same farms and processing plants for generations. Now, Oregon has done a great job in testing and tracking contacts as the seasonal workers have arrived, and with that very agressive approach by the State, I don't consider this as an extreme threat at all. The seasonal workers are damned well welcome and essential.
