April 30, 1945
After the Soviets got within 500 meters of the Führerbunker in Berlin, Adolf Hitler died from the combined effects of cyanide poisoning and a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His wife, Eva Hitler (née Braun) was found dead of cyanide poisoning in the same room. The bodies were taken outside and burnt. It took Soviets two days to fight their way to the bunker.
Eight days after Hitler's suicide, Karl Dönitz, the President of the German Reich (and--because of the large numbers of deaths, suicides, and defections--simultaneously the Minister of War and the Großadmiral of the Kriegsmarine), unconditionally surrendered to the Allies. This day is known as Victory in Europe Day, or V-E Day for short.

Did he really die in Germany at that time? I saw a show on the History channel (I think) a few years ago which included interviews from Argentinians who said they served at a mountain resort/isolated compound and he was there until he died in something like 1963. The show talked about all the light poles being removed from a boulevard near his German bunker so the road could be used as an airstrip. Some ex-CIA guy was one of the main speakers. I say this mostly in disbelief but there's no OSU vs UCLA baseball series this weekend to talk about instead.

According to a Monty Python sketch he changed his name to Hilter and relocated to SW England.
