I figured he would sign with someone as an UDFA...

I was surprised to see Clay get picked up before Gus! Gus was a 4 year starter for a D1 team, Clay barely saw the field...

I would think that signing as a free agent depends a lot on who your agent is and his history of success. Sales and promotion are skills that feed on their past. There are a lot of good football players out there. Getting a chance might need a little grease.

Another thought is...does Gus want to keep playing? I don't have any inside info, but it does seem odd he has no undrafted signing yet of he wants to keep playing. Maybe he wants to turn the page?

I believe Lavaka is also 26 yrs old - went on his LDS mission. So I could see a scenario where you've got a couple OL UDFA candidates competing for a spot and all things being equal, front office might go with the younger guy due to age & maybe a higher ceiling.

Sorry i went to edit this and time was up. I'm pretty sure I saw on twitter the suggestion from someone close to the program that Gus was disappointed he didn't get a phone call so it's likely he was interested in continuing his career.

There was some chatter before the draft that he could be a seventh rounder. It did not pan out for him, though. We can all speculate as to the why, but does anyone know anything?

Is there really a lot of difference between being a 7th rounder and being a UDFA? 7th round is not a guarantee of a roster spot or guaranteed money. A lineman might actually do almost as well in negotiations as a free agent if he finds a team that really wants him. I'd hope he doesn't get discouraged simply because of not getting drafted, if he's good enough to play at that level he'd still have a shot.
