If osu could hire the right guy for our next coach, and get our share of the best wrestlers in the Northwest, how good could this program be if we could develop those wrestlers? Top 10-15 nationally?top 25? I would assume we also hit California for some talent too...

The program is capable of and should be a top 15 program year in and year out. IMHO

I know that OSU never got a wrestler to the national championship final match during Zalesky's tenure but did any Oregon-raised wrestlers competing for other schools manage to make 1st or 2nd at Nationals?

Agree completely. No reason we shouldn't have multiple all-Americans each year...maybe not right away, but certainly soon.

Yeah, Tyler Berger was a National Finalist, 3rd and 5th. We could all agree that is pretty darn good

Personally I’d hit Idaho hard as well. Some tough kids in Idaho every year. With that said, getting “better at recruiting” is only part of the issue. The other big issue is the conference image. We’re in a mid-major wrestling wise. My kid knows every little detail about the Big10 schools thanks to FloWrestling. He watches Iowa/Penn St/Michigan/Ohio St etc. knows the rosters, knows the coaches. We aren’t going to keep them all in state but we need to make it a tougher decision to leave. My son’s juco teammate called OSU “where awesome high school careers go to die.” He’s not exactly wrong. So we need to develop guys, demonstrate an exciting brand of wrestling and reengage with the high schools and clubs. It’s a tall order...

Coach Johnson was able to make it work at osu in the mid 1990's when osu was very good. Gutches,Renner, etc were very good wrestlers. Osu finished second at nationals in the mid 1990's...1995 I believe. The program has been stagnant for awhile. We have needed a new face leading this program for atleast 3-4 years. I'm holding out hope we can get a well connected coach who can elevate osu wrestling.

Cordray,Whittake,Cantu, and others are leaving the state. We need to keep them here... Wittlake wants to be an Olympian, never really considered us - was more about the staff and training partners in the room. IIRC Colbray family didn’t hit it off with the staff at all. We tried. Not sure Cantu will be a huge loss. I like him and his dad was awesome to my kid at Salem Elite but I’m curious to see how he’ll do as a pretty short 197lbs wrestler at that level. Certainly more than happy to be wrong there. Other one that will sting is Sean Harman out of West Linn. He went something like 20-1 as a RS for Mizzou. 2 other Oregonians who qualified for Nationals this year were Tanner Harvey at American and Collin Purinton at Nebraska.

How good could we be with the right coach, staff and solid recruiting? I think it will be harder than it was in the 90's. The state HS landscape needs to be beefed up and the best kids need to have OS on their short list from the beginning. Same with WA, talent levels go in cycles. Oregon hasn't been as strong since going to 6 classifications IMO. Along with that is the relationships the coaching staff build with the wrestling community. HS coaches, kids, & parents. Drop a hint or two, we want you here.
Where I would like us to be eventually. Never out of the top 25. In our worst years 20-25, with the goal and intent of moving up the very next season. Being a top 10 program should be our goal, and in our very best years, in the top 5 or pushing for a team trophy (top 4).
To do that you need the horses. 5 All Americans, 2 of those very high placers, possibly finalists. Other guys that go to NCAAs have to be point scorers, no 0-2 & BBQ. Steel sharpens steel. Guys have to like to train, are motivated and hate to lose. It's a mindset. Use your loses to motivate you more.

I know Dave,Santos(about 60) and Pete...all from the Gervais/Woodburn area.Brothers... Related???

We need a guy who can recruit the Midwest a bit,and certainly California.

I believe they are from Gervais originally so probably related. Santos II wrestled for Gervais HS.

Both Santos the elder and David are/were into Marshall arts. Most definitely related to Santos the youngster.
