A good man. I respected him as a musician, as a leader and as a guy who enjoyed the yearly challenge of making musicians out of a bunch of undisciplined (to say the least) 18-22 year-olds. OSUMB 1979-80

It's a great loss to OSU, a man that kept OSU marching band relevant, and served our school so well for so long.

It's a great loss to OSU, a man that kept OSU marching band relevant, and served our school so well for so long. In recent years as the OSUMB revived and became even larger than it was at the peak of JD's tenure I think it must have been very gratifying to him. Similar somewhat to what Jack Riley must have felt seeing the growth of the OSU baseball program under Pat Casey. A program that Riley's persistence and dedication saved from complete extinction. P.S. for those who don't know, Jim Douglass could give Doc Severinsen and Maynard Ferguson a serious run for their money on the trumpet. Former first chair soloist in the US Navy Band and an upper-register monster.
