ESPN rates how college teams do in the recruiting wars each year. I found ratings back to 2012, and looking at the teams listed decided that the top 4 had at least 2 five star recruits and figured that means they genuinely had a good year. Listing all of those teams and then comparing it to the list of teams in the national championship game I noticed a very strong correlation. There were only three teams that hadn't been in a championship match at least once.
Ohio State- They did it once and is an anomaly due to a number of top recruits in Ohio or adjoining states.
UCLA- Only once and maybe because it's LA and the mystique of it being UCLA still works?
Oregon- Happened twice. First time was a combination of Oregon's recruiting and hiring Oregon State's recruiting director. On next years group I looked up for comments from the Oregon recruits and they all mention Ionescu.
My two conclusions
1- Oregon State losing Taya and then KB cost OSU the chance at a really big year that would have given them a big up in the recruiting wars.
2- Both Rueck and Tinkle have mentioned that they didn't send someone back into a game just to try to get a triple double. I've bad mouthed Graves for his force feeding Ionescu her triple doubles, but maybe.....if you haven't done it on the court yet then getting it through the media is the way to go. Sure has worked for Oregon.
