Should have been 3rd team instead of Doyle from Iowa. Just my opinion.

Should have been 3rd team instead of Doyle from Iowa. Just my opinion. Doyle was a stud this year. Pivec is great but had a number of games where she was clearly frustrated and struggled mightily. Nobody is perfect but consistency counts for a lot in my book and unfortunately NOBODY from OSU was particularly consistent this year, they all had their struggles as did the team overall.

Doyle was POY for the Big 10 this season and earned her spot. Pivec needed to score more and/or OSU win 3+ more games this year in order for her to move up to one of the top three AA teams. Near the halfway mark of the season when the Beavs were 15-0, Pivec was likely at least a second team AA.

Pivec beat Doyle in shooting from the 2 and the 3, doubled her rebounds and had a way better A/TO. Doyle score three more points/game. Not sure I see the overwhelming advantage to Doyle.

Scoring usually carries the day in the AA voting unless your team does extremely well (see Baylor's Cox and South Carolina's Harris). I think that Pivec was the only D1 woman to score 14+ per game, rebound 9+ per game, have 4+ assists, and shoot 50% or more from the field in '19-'20. However, she didn't shoot often enough (or make a higher percentage than 50% from the field) per game to average 16+ points per game, an average that likely would have earned her at least third team AA. In the OSU system, only Slocum took 12+ shots per game this past season. Slocum shot well (45%) from the field for a guard and averaged 14.9 points per game. One must shoot very well from the field (see first team AA Ruthy Hebard) and/or get to the line a lot to average more than 15 points per game on only 11-12 shots per game. Sydney Wiese averaged 15.4/5.0/4.7/45% while earning third team AA honors in '16-'17 and leading the Beavs to a 31-5 record and a PAC-12 regular season title. Pivec's numbers this past season were 14.8/9.3/4.5/50% for a team that finished 23-9. A player typically has to help her team to a better record and/or score more than Pivec did if she is to earn third team or better AA honors.

Nobody is perfect but consistency counts for a lot in my book and unfortunately NOBODY from OSU was particularly consistent this year, they all had their struggles as did the team overall. Obviously this made me look at Doyle's stats, particularly her consistency. I only looked at 4 games to see what this consistency may be, Clemson, Iowa St, Nebraska, and Maryland. Against Clemson Doyle had 8 Turnovers, against Maryland she had 7. Against Iowa State she shot 5-14, and against Nebraska she shot 4-15. Immediately I saw her consistency seemed to be in points per game, even if it meant a bad shooting night. I didn't watch Doyle closely this season, so maybe she deserves 3rd team ahead of Mik, but if I'm looking at stats, I would take Mik all day long. Mik's shooting effiency and rebounding were markedly better than Doyles .501 to .441 and 9.3 rebounds per game to 4.6. Doyle also had many more TO's but I'm sure she handled the ball much more than Mik, yet only average a little over 1 assist per game more than Mik. Back to consistency though, Mik had some 'off' games, but overall was about as consistent as you will ever see a basketball player. Doyle may be be considered consistent as well, but definitely not any more consistent than Mik judging by the only four games on their schedule that I checked the stats on.

I saw OSU more than Iowa. When I did watch Iowa, Doyle was stuffing the stat sheet and usually leading her team to a win. They trailed off a bit at the end but were in the hunt for the Big 10 title almost the whole way. Here's what really impresses me about Doyle--they lost 3 starters from the previous season including probably their best player ever in Gustafson. They were expected to take a fairly big step backward. They didn't. Finished w/ the same conference record, although 3rd this year compared to 2nd last season. Overall record at 23-7 in a shortened season not as good as 29-7 obviously and they likely wouldn't have made it to the Elite 8 this year. Still, not that much of a dropoff considering what they lost.
Oregon St. by contrast lost 1 full time starter and 1 part time starter from the previous season, neither of whom was remotely close to a program best. They did have several significant injuries during the season. Regardless the season ended up being at least a little bit disappointing (I'd say more than a little, but I'm trying to be generous).

Maryland's Kaila Charles was probably the most vulnerable to be replaced on the third AA team with her stats (14.3/7.3/2.2/50%), but her team won the Big 10 title with a 28-4 record and would have been a #1 seed in the NCAA tourney if the tourney had not been cancelled. Winning a lot plus strong stats will get a player on one of the top three AA teams. Doyle and Charles had enough of both.
