The real deal. This afternoon, I am home alone. Something gets caught sideways. I absolutely cannot breathe. Which means you have maybe a minute. Keep in mind that when the below is going on, I am scared s%#tless. I stand up and try to do the classic Heimlich to myself. I do not have the strength and leverage to do it effectively. Keep in mind here, that I have not had any air for what seems like about an hour. I know I have little time. Then, I get a bright idea. I wander over to the end of the couch. I bend over., positioning my diaphragm over the end, and let my legs collapse. Nothing. Peel myself off the floor and try again. 2nd time, a little bit, not enough. One more time, 3rd time charm. It ain't great, but at least, I am now breathing. I do remember that in my Red Cross training you really should seek assistance after such an episode. So, I call the ER, ask the nurse if there is anything I should do, assuring her that I am breathing fairly well. OK, fine. Few minutes later, the doorbell rings. Fire department paramedics. Vitals, conversation, check me out. How did you do it? Innovative thinking. I told them, not innovative, desperation. Ribs and belly, sore.
BTW, I am fine. Really. Just want to pass it on, if this happens, BEAT THE HELL OUT OF THE DIAPHRAGM.

I was working in a big "cube farm" as a young professional. The delivery guy showed up, and there were some candies on a counter. The delivery guy took one and started to choke.
The dude in the cube next to me stood up, and said to the delivery guy, "If you're choking, raise your hand", expecting that if the guy raised his hand, he would go over and give him the Heimlich.
Well, the delivery guy raised his hand and said, "WOW! How did you know that would work!" as the obstruction dislodged from the simple raising of his hand.

Damn, never even thought about raising my hand. Sure would have been easier. 😁
