I was recently thinking about how some players improve so much from year to year and others who often seem to have much more basic talent to begin with do not.
While we all would acknowledge that Grymek was not blessed with many natural physical basketball attributes other than being tall, she improved tremendously in the two years she was in the program. I do not believe I ever saw a moment when she was on the floor that she was not giving 100% effort.
I compare her to Morris who seems to have much more natural talent but seems to not becoming a whole lot better than when she arrived. She is clearly a better player than Grymek, but her improvement from start to where she is now is way way less than Jo's.
Jasmine Simmons is an example of someone who looks like she has made great strides in the two years.
Unfortunately perhaps the highest rated recruit we have ever had (Andrea) will apparently never have the opportunity to show us what she may have been capable of.

I disagree about how far Morris has come as a player. She started slightly above 0 as she did not know how to make a pass or shoot the ball and now does both just fine. With an average playing time of 5 minutes she doesn't get much time to show what she's got. I think Jones is the obvious starter, but Morris is the best back up in the Pac-12.

I don't think half this team has put in much effort this year and I think it has frustrated Mik alot and sometimes it shows in her comments. Thus the team never had a good chemistry this year if a 100% effort was not across the board.

The recruiting services and SR had it dead wrong! "Slightly above a 0"... hmmm... first time for everything!

What about Prechtel at Stanford? Or Giomi at Oregon? Would love to see Morris be a consistently productive player who becomes a starter in this conference. It will take a lot of hard and extra work by her to make that happen.

Didn't forget about Giomi. But I did forget that Prechtel is back to backup duty.

Morris is currently averaging 6.9 minutes per game in the games in which she has played. If the Beavs find themselves with Jones in foul trouble and in need for playing a big 5 (taller than Maddie's 6'1"), we could see Morris play during important portions of a game. We will see if she is ready if/when that time should come. If she can bother shots and protect the paint without fouling, that would be a big boost. She is capable of doing that. Would like to see her play more physically in the paint and not let shorter players push her around down low.

Some kids like to prove themselves in a game time situation. morris when I see her play shows improvement. But minutes arent their. Rueck played and started the 6,8 girl last year and I know Morris is more mobile then her last year but. She didn't get to play. I just don't get his thinking on this. Theirs plenty of playing time for her we are so depleted with ht but he sticks with a shorter line up that cost us with Arizona and USC. She has 5 fouls to give per game. I think it's a shame Rueck won't try different line ups like when you watch the triangle. Two posts. Triangle allows for outside shooters too. Watch Duke boys in half court, they run triangle. You don't need to have a 4 and a 5. Many teams like UCLA and ASU run no 5 or 4. Its what players are available you make use of their skills or ht.

Did you watch the last game against cal? Rueck really mixed things up for the start of the second half.

I liked what he did versus cal. He had morris out their in place of Jones. Then he went back to a shorter line up with basically 4 guards or wings. I don't consider Washington a 4 or 5 but a wing. I liked what happened their with that match up. But Cal was starting a lot of inexperienced players. When he did that against Arizona and UCLA we cane up short.

We know that Coach Rueck is paid to win games and run a clean program. He sees the players in training and practice far more than we do. I am sure that he has considered playing Morris more minutes, but has decided to use her sparingly because he believes that other player options on the floor give his team a better chance to win at this time. The recent losing streak likely prompted his decision against Cal to bench his top three scorers and force others to become more assertive during the five-minute run that they were on the floor together. It was interesting that Morris was the first to score in the third quarter against Cal on a 12' shot from the right baseline that may have been the longest field goal of her OSU career to date. I was a bit shocked when I saw Morris let it go, but it was true and gave that unit and the entire team a big lift.
