They had one practice without KB to get ready for a game. This week they will have four, and a walkthrough on Friday, to prepare. We obviously can't run many of the same offensive sets without KB, a far more versatile offensive player than whomever replaces her. So we have to trim back out playbook, so to speak, and do a much better job of running what we can run. It's still very frustrating to see what injuries have done to the last two seasons. Kat Tudor was playing at such a high level last year when she got hurt. Is it just me or is Kat rounding into form now? It seems she's been much more like pre-ACL Kat lately. She seems to be moving better, but she's only shooting 21% from 3 in pac-12 play. If Aleah keeps on her current form, and Kat becomes a 40% shooter again, it would help a lot.

Have any of you seen USC Fr. Pili play? She's a human battering ram. She's not real tall, but she has plenty of size and she's not the slightest bit shy about using it. That could be an interesting match up for Jones or Washington. Their other post Overbeck isn't dainty or a finesse player either. Like Hebard, another Alaska girl. Three time Alaska Gatorade POY, I believe.

Had Kat made 2 more 3's in the home game vs AZ, that would have changed the outcome of our game from a L to W. Whether Kat returns to form is a mystery to me. Kat's defensive physical capabilities seem to have returned to form, but it seems her shooting confidence has not returned. If that changes "to the good", Beavs will be a tough out. We clearly missed Kennedy's presence yesterday--she adds many intangibles, such as taking pressure off Taylor Jones as the only BIG that we can lob down low.
Having said all that, other players need to be given the opportunity to prove they can contribute: Trish Morris & Jas Simmons come to mind. As Pivec stated in the post game conference, others have to step up, and be comfortable being uncomfortable. But first, Rueck needs to put them on the floor for sustained periods.

Just one would have done it. I remember we had an open 3 in the 3rd up 5 that would have pushed the lead to 8 and we missed it. I don't remember who shot it. Then McDonald hit a 3 on the other end to take it to 2. Heck, even Maddie hitting one of her free throws or AZ missing ANY of there's and we win in regulation.

Tudor is playing through pain and is not 100%. You can see her limping during games after hitting the ground on plays. She is playing on adrenaline, guts, and her love for the game. I admire her desire to be there for her teammates this season. She could have sat out this season and saved her final season of eligibility for when she was closer to 100%.
Brown's absence is a problem going forward. Washington gave us 11 rebounds yesterday and Thropay plays hard. Both give up length to the other 4s in our conference.

I believe I am correct that the NCAA denied Kat Tudor's request for an additional full year so she was basically forced into playing this year or no longer playing at all.

She petitioned for a medical redshirt for last season. However, that was denied. Had it been approved she would have had two years eligibility left...this year and next.

In the Beav's five loses the score toward the end of the game was in reach of a win. I can see two reasons for not getting over the hump.
1- Production from the four veteran guards. In each one of these loses there has been only one of the guards who has had a good productive game. And not a lights out kind of game, just not 0-8 kind of games. And this isn't just Aleah and Kat. If Mik is on then Destiny is off and vice versa. Both Kat and Aleah are starting to extend their games to the inside for when their 3 shooting is off. I hope there's enough time for them to get better at it.
2- At one of the recent pressers the press asked Destiny and Mik who the person was who talked up the group in the huddle. They looked blankly at each other and then said Maddie talks some. Really? The two captains of the team had to think and then came up with someone else was speaking up a little. If the captains don't want the job then they need to officially pass it on to Maddie and proceed to follow her. I can say from personal experience that a good leader in the game can turn you from zombies into maniacs ready to go tooth and nail to win. I would have figured that Mik was a leader by example and not talkative, but I would have thought that Destiny should be up for the job. They could have really used a leader in that OT. And the lack of one left them dead out there.

I saw that too, but I read into it that it was Mik, but she didn’t want to come across as brash so she looked around. But I guess since nobody just said it’s Mik, you are probably right that there’s a void.

With Kennedy out for the rest of the year, we are woefully thin up front. There's 80 minutes at the 4 and 5 spots that need to be filled, and only Taylor, Janessa, Maddie, and Trish to fill them. Taylor's being foul prone makes this even more problematical. Trish is going to have to somehow step up and give us 20 or more solid minutes a game, as will Maddie.
Can't expect a great deal of offense from Maddie and Trish, and about none from Janessa, so even more pressure on the other positions for that. They'll have to play small at times, and will need more offense from Jasmine as well.
Tough row to hoe. Last summer, we were looking at the biggest lineup in women's basketball, but 13' 4" of that never played a minute this year, and another 12' 9" of it is now also lost. That's the hand we're dealt, though; play it and see what happens.

Don’t underestimate these players or their coach. Next woman up, and maybe it takes all 3 of Maddie, Trish, and Janessa to fill the frosh’s shoes in various ways and situations, so be it.
Equally, if not more important than replacing Brown’s contributions, is our guards finding their shooting strokes and the coaches continuing to draw up plays to give them the opportunity to shoot.

Taylor Jones has a sweet shot from 15 feet and closer. Coach needs to reinsert Gulich's senior year, inside-plus-outside game and plug Jones into a few sweet elbow jumpers immediately.

For now, we are going to need her under the boards and shooting the high percentage short hooks and lay ins. She must be near 80% on shooting .
