Just read a game recap of the Corvallis High School girl's basketball game last night, and one of their players "took the game off to rest." The coach said the move was made to be "cautious and careful." There's more to this right? We aren't load managing high schoolers who play two games a week are we? What is the nature of your concern? My initial reaction is amusement, given that professional players are taking more rest days than ever in a time when the schedule has never been more forgiving. That a high schooler without the travel demands of a professional would need to rest when only playing two games a week seems comical by comparison. Of course the second reaction is that it’s not really for rest purposes and there’s something more going on, and yes that is concerning. It just struck me as strange in a game story, as it brings up more questions than it answers.

That a high school girls basketball coach decided one of their players could benefit from sitting out a game.

I am puzzled by many of these replies, of course I'm pretty sure those posters are puzzled by mine too. I get what nabeav is saying, and I bet all of you do to without trying to be pc, perhaps because it's a girl's game? Obviously he's pointing out something that he thinks is new to high school sports, and unusual. I agree! When was the last time you remember someone on one of your HS teams needing to take a game off to rest? Hs kids don't need rest, at least they never did in 1978-1981 where I grew up. I had to fight for playing time in 2/3 sports I played and I could only wish that someone needed a game off to rest! I would do anything for more playing time. I played a basketball game with 2 sprained ankles because I wasn't about to give up the opportunity. So to hear that a high school kid needs a game off to rest? That's nutty! So his question is that there must be more to this. I should hope so! HIPPA? Something personal? Like I said, I hope so.

"Tres Tinkle did not play vs. Oregon for rest purposes." The CHS girls basketball coach is Mark James. Maybe you should email or write him a letter asking him to spell out the circumstances behind his decision to rest one of his players for a game? If you’re interested in finding out, that is. P.S. One instance does not constitute a trend.

Smith, Tinkle, Canham and Rueck are going to be getting a lot of emails!

Figured someone would come up with that always intelligent response. I’ve got one kid in college and two in HS, all in multiple sports. Have never seen an instance where a player was held out to rest. Have you?

Only one person can answer that question. He’s a public employee, ask him. I am loving the utter absurdity of this thread.

I remember players taking a game off to "rest" a sore ankle or knee. Given today's rules and regulations, coach probably couldn't say that.

The some would argue if they are genuine and/or read in their own interpretations... plenty of fodder for a message board still
