I met coach Lamer at our tailgater last fall. Nice man,and a good coach. I've watched osu wrestling since the early 1970's. Hicks,Knorr,Beilenburg,Harris,Plourd, etc. I wished we had a man at the helm who could corral the best of the in-state kids. We used to be built on top state of Oregon kids. The right guy at the helm imo could do that... Kids from McNary,Sprague,Silverton,N.Salem,Drain,Marist,Lowell,Hermiston, Tigard, S.Medford, used to dominate our roster...top kids...an opportunity is being missed by uo not having a program. Hanging around the older wrestling alumni and hearing their stories; this was exactly the case. Coach Thomas had good relationships with the HS coaches, some of who were OSU wrestling alumni. He also built youth wrestling in the state. To my point, there was an unwritten rule the 'best' kids would be highly encouraged to go to OS. That is what made us strong in the 70's through the mid 90's. That is a big reason why the 616 banner hangs in Gill honoring coach Dale Thomas.

One of the guys from the mid1970's team team has come to our tailgater. I picked his brain as to the feeling about this program. Dale Thomas had a very good relationship with in-state coaches,as did coach Johnson. Not sure why we continue to be o.k. with mediocre at best results in the osu wrestling program. With the right coach, this could be a perennial top 10-15 program every year. It's sad that we are stuck with a guy who can't elevate the program at all...

Didnt Kevin Roberts do some coaching at CV as well? I feel like the loss of Roberts and Steiner was just such a blow
I think Kaden used to come to all the OSU camps and was close to the coaches. Very tough he couldn't get the state win.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees the obvious. OSU deserves a better coach.

I think there's also another issue of being brushed aside in the Athletic Department. It seems no matter how well osu wrestling did earlier in the 2010s, they kind of got put behind with women's basketball growing and gymnastics being one of the big shows at the time. I remember the Pac-12 three peat celebration and the team was literally undercut by women's basketball at the gill party. Not saying women's basketball wasn't exciting, but I think it made wrestling be overlooked. And of course now with the state that it's in, it's not going to get attention.

I was speaking as much to geography- though a few more guys that grew up bucking hay and moving irrigation pipes would be positives! Do many kids around here do that anymore? Some of us retired guys still do

Maybe they should develop Girls wrestling as well. I am biased as I have a Grand Daughter wrestling and winning in High School. She missed State as a Freshman by one match. Seems to Me just Hiring a so so Coach will not be the answer. Aspire to be the best.

The Kuenzi clan/families are as far from the stereotype of Scotts Mills as one can get! Good people... but... I was speaking as much to geography- though a few more guys that grew up bucking hay and moving irrigation pipes would be positives! I did my share of both growing up. Not sure how much it helped my wrestling.
