*** A note - HS coaches tend to play their best athlete at SS or on the mound. You see the best gloves/arms at shortstop, but in college ball many of those guys move to 2B or 3B, or in Ryan Ober's case, 1B. Last season's OSU roster listed Gretler, Mendazona, Dukart, Harvey, Armstrong, McMahan, Clayton, Ober and Meckler that all played extensively at SS in high school.
Beau Philip was our shortstop.
This fall, we added Boyd, Valero-Sanchez, Dernedde, and Mascarenas to the shortstop mix. The message is clear, high school shortstops need to enter a college program with some position versatility - the game is played with only one shortstop. Another consideration - many prep shortstops also pitch, some are fairly gifted at it, but it isn't their primary position. Does the name Bryce Fehmel strike a familiar note?
