Perhaps I simply didn't see it, but I am not aware of a single thing "marketing" has done to facilitate sales of tickets for that specific game. My guess would be that, as somebody else suggested, Duck fans bought a bunch of tickets before Beaver fans even thought about it. Perhaps the marketing people for Ducks basketball came up with that idea - let's buy all the available tickets now before the OSU people do, and have a big presence at Gill clad in green and yellow. That's just speculation; hope I'm wrong. I'm just not very impressed with efforts by the athletic department to broaden the fan base. I'm a season ticket holder, so I get emails on their promotions - preaching to the choir. My neighbors who don't have seats never see any of that. If you have a great product that, sales wise, just keeps doing better, you advertise that to get even more people on board - big ad in the local paper announcing that X number of season tickets have already been sold (a record), get yours now - the cost is low and the product is great, that type of thing. OSU doesn't do that. You let things speak for themselves if you're Augusta National hosting the Masters; the rest of the world promotes like hell to stay ahead of the other guys. Oh, and geniuses don't self promote? Mozart never made efforts to ensure royalty was aware of him? The Pope just happened to stumble across Michelangelo when he wanted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel painted? Thomas Edison never electrocuted the elephant? Stephen Hawking never wrote a book designed for laymen? Steve Jobs just sat in his office? Warren Buffet kept his ownership of Berkshire Hathaway to himself and never held an annual meeting designed to garner widespread attention? Einstein just opted to stay at the patent office and publish relativity theory anonymously? Shakespeare just stayed in Avon and only provided copies of his works to close family and friends? I don't think so, friend.

No, that other local paper, the New York Times. Yes, the local paper, which would include the Albany paper. Covers a local market of 125,000 to 150,000 or so. Was there another market from which you might expect to draw a significant number of additional bodies? This ain't football, a much bigger deal where thousands are willing to drive down from Portland 6 Saturdays each year. If you're going to draw people to 18 games per year, frequently 2 on different days of the same weekend, you had better plan on getting them locally, or you're spinning your wheels. I would also point out that, while not much of a newspaper overall, the GT sports section certainly devotes a lot of its content to OSU sports. Many people I know here in town pretty much get it for only that reason. So you've got an advertising vehicle that the great majority of your target audience is reading for the express purpose of gaining more knowledge about OSU athletics. and, though they might normally ignore an ad from the local Ford dealership, there's a real good chance they'll actually pay a little attention to an ad from the Beavs athletic department. But, what would be your preference? Full page in the Christian Science Monitor?

Talk about a promotion...I'll be in Tucson during January and Arizona has a promotion that I got 5 games (all PAC 12 conference contests) for $20. That is $4/game.

Not sure why that is because marketing would be too easy of an answer.
What I found with womens sports the general sports base is either interested or it is not. Talk to people at other events on what they are missing and they might say they would tune into a game if they happen to be on when they are home. To go to a game is a whole other level of commitment. I don't think an ad will bridge that gap.
You said they would ignore the ad from a local Ford dealership? Not if they were in the market for a car or truck. Kind of the same thing.

I fail to see how comments about the less than stellar performance of John Doe and the folks in marketing translate to one being a "supposed fan" of Mikayla Pivec and the folks on the basketball team.They're 2 very separate things, are they not?
I also fail to see how any comments translate to spinning the sellout as bad news. Matter of fact, if you had bothered to look at the initial comment that ultimately sent this thread off on a tangent, you will note that the first three words, which referenced the game being sold out, were, "That's good news."
I think the Athletic Department does a poor job of marketing an excellent product. That has nothing whatsoever to do with what I think of the product itself. I also think you have a tendency to read much more into things than actually are there, as you did several months ago when I joked that Ron Callan could sing, "California, here I come" for Kat Tudor on Senior Day to keep his string of foreign national anthems going.
You should work on that. Take a few minutes to think things through before jumping in.
