Used to be able to get enough good wrestlers out of Oregon alone to put together a better team than we have now. How the sport has collapsed here. Horrible. HS football isn't that far behind. Watching the 5A/6A playoffs it should be a 4 team/8 team bracket. Honestly across the board it seems a few sports have collapsed with the level of talent. Not sure what's going on there. As far as wrestling goes, it seems we lost the "Pac12" edge we had a few years ago. ASU hiring the stud coach didn't help, and Stanford stepping up the recruiting game also hit us hard. I was hoping we would continue to push and really hold strong on west coast wrestlers, especially the northwest talent that coach Z had been known to get.

Scrambling to add a team like Arkansas-Little Rock to stay relevant at a 6 team league is a good indicator. Still can't believe Fresno isn't an affiliate school. Plus kids have way more access to what's going on at other schools in the B12 and B10 now. Most duals between the powerhouse schools are easily available online. My kid had favorite college wrestlers when he was in high school just from watching videos on Flowrestling or various outlets. So yeah, it's definitely a draw - kids want to wrestle in the Big 10 for Michigan, Penn State or Ohio State just like there are a slew of kids who want to play football in the SEC for Bama or LSU. In the meantime, we've got to recruit better and develop the kids once they get here. And recruiting the entire NW, not just Oregon. There are zero D-1 programs in Washington, Idaho and Montana. I know we try to be active in Washington and when it comes to having team camps in the summer, but doesn't appear to be paying off. Think losing Roberts and Steiner was a lot bigger than people realize on both fronts (recruiting + development).

Lets face it this year is a 'down' year, building for next year and beyond. We are RS Hunter at 157. We don't have a 174, no offense to Biesley, but I don't think the coaches envisioned him being 'the guy' at 174 at the beginning of the season. Guys that are new to the line up will use the year for experience and hoping to get better.
As mentioned earlier, recruiting is the lifeblood of the program. Until we win recruiting battles and keep kids at home or lure them out west, we will continue on the trajectory we are on now.
Facilities wise, we have a great room, locker room, weights, student center etc. I think we can compete with most in the country sans the elites in these categories.
For the few previous years we have been 2 guys book-ending 8 others. Bresser and Dhesi have anchored the team, but not a lot from the rest of the line up. Now that they are gone, we are young and inexperienced at most weights. We are in lean times. Does the AD allow more time to build & improve, or do they make a change..that is their decision to make.

Speaking of 174, Abner Romero is still wrestling. Took 4th in Reno last week wrestling unattached. Given that he's still in wrestling shape and competing, I'm holding out hope that he's a winter term addition like Reyes was a couple seasons ago. That would be a big addition.

That's a great point on the wrestling center. I've talked to a few of the guys and they tell me this is one of the better ones across the country. And I agree on that point with Roberts and Steiner being bigger losses than we think.
