From the Board of Trustees public notices listserve comes a bit of news today:
Oregon State University’s Board of Trustees will hold a special board meeting to consider the appointment and employment agreement of Oregon State University’s next president for a term starting on July 1, 2020.
The meeting begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, in the Memorial Union Horizon Room on the OSU Corvallis campus.
The candidate under consideration for appointment will be introduced publicly at the Dec. 13 board meeting. If appointed, the candidate will succeed President Ed Ray, who announced in March that on June 30, 2020, he will step down as president after 17 years of service and join OSU’s teaching faculty.
Following the board meeting, trustees will host a reception in the main lounge of the Memorial Union from 10:45 a.m. to noon to welcome the president-elect. The reception is open to the public.
Seems pretty much like a slam-dunk, as if the decision is a fait accompli. It's only a 45-minute meeting, and there was no alternative ending to the meeting proposed, like, "If not appointed, the reception is canceled and the food shall be distributed to GTAs in lieu of a new contract..."
What say we all show up and welcome the new boss, and show them they should have booked a bigger room?

People criticizing President Ray or minimizing his record just make me laugh. I remember what OSU’s campus looked like and how the institution was regarded in the State prior to his taking over in 2003. We’ll be very fortunate if his replacement matches his record of accomplishments.

Some seem to forget there are MANY folks behind the scenes who made OSU's improvements possible. Some even more vital that Ray. Giving him all the credit is what is truly laughable.

There are also many people responsible for the demise of OSU football in the 1970s and 1980s, but Robert MacVicar gets most, if not all, of the blame. Truth is, the boss gets most of the credit for accomplishments and the boss gets most of the the blame for failure.

Head coach gets the credit, head coach gets the blame. Sure lots of presidents COULD HAVE done what Ray did.... RAY DID DO, what Ray did. He assemled the teams, and pushed the issues and was absolutely proped up by his employees and supporters and I am sure he will be the first to say that in his resignation speech. Leaders get too much credit for the things that go right and too much blame for the things that go wrong, that is just the way of the world and you know that. We all like to take the convienent, "It was all his assistants" line or the "It was all the head coach line" when it suits us, and both are disengenuous. Did good things get done at OSU in the last 17 years? Unequivicobly YES. Which means OSU, President Ray, all of his staff, all of the proffessors, all of the students and all of the Alumni were successful. Period. No reason to try to cut off the nose to spite the face. Congrats on a great run, President Ray.

Giving him all the credit is what is truly laughable. Typical baseba1111.
Deliberately misstate other people's opinions so that you can spit your vitriol.

Typical idiot... vitriol? Didn't read anything by others, nor did I post anything close to vitriol. Do you know the definition? "his replacement matches his record of accomplishments." Seems replacement is singular... his accomplishments also fairly easy to see as singular. Is idiot misstating your post? Kid... perfect

I am totally speculating here. I thank Dr Ray for everything he has done. He transformed the campus. Full stop. He may have "lost a step" in his last few years. I would attribute that to losing his wife several years ago. He probably delegated lots of stuff to Assistant Provosts. And maybe didn't oversee the work as closely as he may have previously. Losing your partner of many many years changes you. Your concentration is shot, your memory is gone. You are triggered by many small things. Heck I was in a full melt down in Costco
Thank you Dr Ray (and Beth too)
