So it’s been brought up before, but I’m bringing it up again. How long until Sydney’s number is “retired” and hung in Gill? Or does the athletic dept even have any notion of it? (I’m sure they do). She is one of my top five favorite athletes of all time at OSU, in any sport. I’m wondering if there is a way to expedite the process?
And also, I was wondering if anyone knows if the banners will be put back up in Gill, but maybe in a different configuration?

Currently the retired numbers for WBB are Carol Menken and Felicia Ragland. Carol in my mind is still arguably the best OSU WBB player ever (27.7 avg PPG, 69% career). Ragland has been surpassed by both Weisner-Scott and Wiese. Hamblin and Gulich are also in the discussion. The book is still being written on the careers of the current squad. But as far as literally retiring more numbers, I’m not a fan of it.

I think there is a waiting period of 5 years before a jersey can be retired? Not sure how that came to be, but there's something to it. Plum's #10 isn't hanging from the rafters in Hec Ed yet, that's about as obvious of a no brainer as you can get.
I gotta think the number of retired jersey's in Gil is going to be increasing soon. The 4 mentioned above. Pivec is making a good case for it.

The five-year rule is for Catholic saints.
I seriously doubt that any thought has been given to retiring Syd's number. Most programs wouldn't even consider it for at least a few more years. That said, Felicia Ragland's jersey was retired the year after she graduated, which tells you a bit about the state of the program in 2003.

She was a very good player, but not a jersey retiring player. And I know, she was an All-American and the first Beav drafted in the WNBA. You need to retire Charlie Sitton's jersey if you're going to retire Felicia's. I'm more of a fan of the ring of honor type thing the use in football rather than actually retiring the number. There are 3 or 4 in the Moda Center that have no business being retired. They got a little excited and retired the whole championship team.

Felicia was Pac-10 Player of the Year her senior year so that's certainly a legitimate accomplishment. But so was Tanja Kostic 2X! and she ain't got no banner.

I'm fine with the numbers that they have retired now outside of Felicia. Although, I can't comment on Ed Lewis, but baseba11111's probably coached him, so he may have some insight. With the level our women's program has achieved, you are going to have to be very selective if you start retiring numbers.

I guess exclusivity is nice, but somehow some of the core players from the rags to riches, 3 straight Pac 12 champions and program first Final 4 deserve some recognition. Weisner was Pac 12 POY her Sr. year.

LOL always kills me at Blazer games to look up and see Gross, Steele, Twardzik, Lloyd Neal hanging from the rafters.

Football has only one "banner", just not sure what gets you on one in Gill..... And I don't think Baseball has any individual banners at all. My guess would be that most schools would only normally retire numbers for consensus first team All Americans who led the program to great heights. (Or for extraordinary circumstances, like Pat Tillman at Arizona State) Terry Baker won the Heisman, so he gets his name up.Jonathan Smith won our biggest bowl game ever in our winningest season ever, but he wasn't a consensus All American, and didn't win any awards, so no number retirement for him. Same for Sid, and that's as it should be.

This surprises me. I would have thought there would have been more support for Sydney. She holds the Pac-12 record for made 3 pointers. She is one of only 13 players in the history of the conference to be all Pac-12 all 4 years. She was third team all American her senior year and one of 10 semi finalists for the Naismith award. She made the ncaa tournament all 4 years, was a 3 time conference regular season champion and one conference tournament champion. Oh and was instrumental in leading the Beavers to their only Final Four appearance. And not only was drafted to the WNBA, but has stayed and even started some games. How many of the men hanging in Gill can match that? And don’t get me wrong, I’m not arguing against any of them. They deserve to be up there, but Sydney is right along side all of them in the history of OSU. I guess I am disappointed in the response to her being possibly honored by OSU. She seems to me like an obvious candidate and not having to “be selective” at all. There have been great players other then her that were a big part in the renaissance of the program, but none more important then Sydney.
