The old coaching adage says, "don't dwell on who you lost, but focus on those you won". So, we won't dwell on the losses - we'll touch it once and move forward with the 2020 recruiting class we won. By national standards, Oregon State has a relatively small class which has become the norm for the Beaver program that recruits high character, academic oriented kids resulting in unusually low roster defections/turnover. Generally speaking, "once we sign em, we keep em" .
College baseball programs lose commitments for a variety of reasons. OSU lost four this year, and we suspect two of those were the direct result of a major coaching change situation that occurred with the retirement of Pat Casey, and then electing not to hire our interim HC or the touted pitching coach. Both were closely connected with all of our 2020-'22 commits and prospects. The brief period of uncertainty prior to Canham being named, may have hurt us in a small way.
Two of the decommitments were the number 2 and 3 ranked players in our class. Catcher Daniel Susac from Sacramento area Jesuit HS was the 41st player ranked nationally by one service and infielder Hunter Haas from the Phoenix area's Corona del Sol HS was ranked the 82nd best player by another service. Only number 3 ranked Mick Able topped those rankings in the OSU class. Both players would have impacted the Beaver's eventual class rankings quite favorably.
Susac signed with Arizona and Haas signed with hometown Arizona State. Oregon State had two other players decommit and sign elsewhere. OF Jared Breedwell from Vacaville in northern California signed with the University of San Francisco and OF Luke Watson from Glendora, California signed with Cal Poly/Pomona.
I think the Beaver staff did a remarkable job in solidifying the 2020-2021 and 2022 commitments during our brief period of upheaval during the period of coaching change.
