Figured we could get a thread going to talk about some potential future WNIT opponents: - Here is the updated bracket after the first round: - Here are the first round recaps: Round 1 Recaps - November 8, 2019Round 1 Recaps - November 9, 2019
Future matchups Quarterfinals: Pacific (Monday 11/11 @ 7:00) - Pacific has Valerie Higgins, a 6-1 guard who chose USC over the Beavers in high school, the subsequently transferred to Pacific. She was a Jordan All-American. She reminds me of a taller, quicker, thinner Pivec, just not as good offensively. Known for her defense and rebounding. I think she'll defend Pivec. Both are stat stuffers. Higgins fouls a ton - Mik should have her on the bench early. They also have a very talented PF in 6-1 Brooklyn McDavid. They'll be a much better team later in the season, once transfers from Louisville and Utah are eligible, but they should provide a decent test

I don't know anything about the Pacific coach Alecia Wilson, but she must have a lot going for her to convince good quality players from USC, Utah and Louisville to transfer to Pacific, to play in a lower level league, and to live in Stockton. Looking forward to meeting up with them on Monday...... GO BEAVS !!

Here is some additional info about this year's Pacific team taken from their WBB website...... --------------
Pacific returns three of its five leading scorers from last season in redshirt junior Valerie Higgins, junior Brooklyn McDavid and senior Jessica Blakeslee. Higgins is the reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Year and a 2018-19 All-WCC First Team Selection, was selected to the 2019-20 WCC Preseason All-Conference team at media day in Las Vegas. Hailing from Granda Hills, Calif., the 6'1" guard averaged 17.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 3.1 steals and 1.2 blocks in her first season in the Orange and Black. Overall, her 550 total points last year ranked second all-time in program history for points in a single season. McDavid, who also earned a spot on the WCC All-Second team last season, has received multiple preseason accolades this fall. The Studio City native joined Higgins in being named to the 2019-20 WCC Preseason All-Conference Team while also being selected as one of twenty players for the 2020 Katrina McClain Award Watch List.....After starting all 32 games as a sophomore for the Tigers last season, McDavid looks to build on her previous averages of 15.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and a 45% shooting percentage. Additionally, Pacific welcomes four Division I transfers in Callie Kaiser (Colorado State), Sofie Tryggedsson (Colorado State), Jordan Cruz (Utah) and Loretta Kakala (Louisville). Furthermore, the Tigers welcome back Cassidy Johnson (redshirt), Savannah Whitehead (mission trip), Josephine Millard, Isabel Newman, Kaylin Randhawa, and Lianna Tillman. -------------------

Not familiar with the preseason WNIT. Who is selected for it, and is it preseason exhibition, or is it poorly named and official?

It's official, and it's meant to be an elite tournament. In theory, it's a "top" team from each of 16 conferences. But, to spread things around they don't let the same team play twice within four years, so it's a crapshoot as to whether it really gets the best. And, for whatever reason, the ACC, Big10, and SEC choose not to participate. It's also unusual for a tournament in that the games are held at the schools and not at a single site - much like the first rounds of the NCAA tournament. womensnit.com/

Missouri State just upset Boise State at Boise, goes on to play Oklahoma. Gotta root for MSU now so we don't have to travel to Oklahoma....

That makes absolutely no sense why Oklahoma would be a higher seeded team than the Beavs and get to host. They were 4-14 in the Big 12 and 8-22 overall last year. They might be better this year, but still...

Darn. I thought/hoped we’d get Boise State. McGwire dropped 19 and 17 in 27 minutes. That’s darn impressive.

The silver lining - our RPI will get a significantly better bump from playing OU on the road than at home.

I suspect it's the conference affiliation, not the individual school, that determines the host. Since the PAC 12 and Big 12 are the only power conferences participating, my guess is that both those conferences' representatives are guaranteed to host 3 games minimum, and it's the Big 12's turn to host 4 if their school makes it that far.
The Power 5 schools would probably give a boost to attendance (unless USC represented the PAC 12) and are better set up for TV. The tournament itself, however, is pretty much a bunch of nothing. The only reason any of us are looking at the results is to see who we play next, and if we get an extra home game.

DePaul is a very, very good team. Let’s not overlook them.

DePaul is a very, very good team. Let’s not overlook them. I haven't watched them yet this year, but I doubt their M.O. has changed. They try to play a helter skelter pace and force turnovers, and they take a TON of 3 pointers. If they aren't hitting them and have turnovers of their own, they can look very bad. And undisciplined. Obviously their coach wants them to launch as often as possible, but their shot selection looks questionable when I've seen them play.

Note that Norman OK is only a couple hours from either Derby KS or Forney TX, so the Jones and Brown families might not share your sentiment :-). We have a couple of games to win before we start pondering venues for the championship, however, as do they..... Go Beavers!
