For as long as I have been attending Beaver basketball games (a long time) the crowd has had a noticeable "underdog" mentality.... They have always cheered heartily for players who have only minor roles, who are not stars, who kinda fit the lunch pail, blue collar profile..... Don't get me wrong, we love our stars and superstars when we have them.....But Gill fans historically have recognized and appreciated what it takes for 3 star players to beat 5 star players.....
That's why, deep down, every OSU fan loves beating USC & UCLA - historically they have been the 5* symbol in the Pac.
Another fact that somehow escapes attention is that the Beaver WBB program has a significant amount of Seniors who follow the team faithfully - and some of them have been seniors for a long time!!...
How this translates into who they admire and who they cheer for, I'm not exactly certain. But I do know they follow the roster closely, they know who has put in sweat equity and who hasn't, who has overcome injury, and who has come to OSU with superstar promise....They aren't always the most knowledgeable fans when it comes to the game itself, but they know the roster and they are loyal to it. They call players by their first name...They send them get well cards when they're injured.
So, yeh, I think greybeav nailed it.....And, by the way, I was openly cheering for Noelle to hit a 3 when she came in off the bench last night.... GO BEAVS !!

During the men's game, somebody lost a shoe. The announcer mentioned that Roberto Nelson lost his shoe once, play wasn't stopped, and he made a pair of 3 pointers with one shoe missing

Okay, nice run at the end of the half. 45-31 lead. Jones has 20 already! Jones plays with such an impressive balance between finesse and toughness. I’ve honestly never seen a Beav WBB ‘big’ that was as far along as she is in their first month of college play. In fact, not even close. I keep expecting to see typical freshman mistakes and they are few and far between. How’s this for an understatement: She’s very good.

We really need to figure out how to handle the press defense. Pac 12 level defenses will lick their chops watching game film of this game. Early get the work in ladies.

That's not a difficult fix, and I would imagine it has already been addressed at practice. To some extent, it was addressed at halftime. We had, I believe, 13 turnovers in the first half and but 2 in the second.

From what I recall, Aleah and Mik had a little but of problems with the press, but Destiny generally did not. They each had three turnovers. I believe one or two of Destiny's came from careless passes into the high post. I'm really excited for tonight's game!

Looking forward to tonight as well. The team did have some trouble being pressed and double teamed while trying to get the ball to half court. This has been a problem for number of years to one degree or another. I'm sure they will be working on this.
Taylor is a bit of an enigma to me. I've been saying all along that she will be the freshman who puts up the stats this year, and she has proven that throughout the Italy trip, the exhibition season and now the first non-conference game. Watching the first half of the game again last night, Taylor just does everything so quietly. No spectacular moves. She just gets open, catches the ball, and puts it in the basket. I think she only dribbled the ball once, and she missed that shot.
beaverwbb said this about her earlier in this thread, "She doesn’t look like anything special, just right place at the right time, keeps it high, and finished (her field goals, free throws are still a work in progress!). Love her game!" I'm just wondering as she gets scouted more, and she plays against bigger, taller post, how she will adjust. There is no doubt her career looks to be outstanding, but I'm looking forward to seeing how quickly she can adjust to Pac-12 level players. In the USA game she rebounded well (9), with no turnovers, but with only 6 points (missed 5 free throws). Those aren't bad numbers considering who the game was against, and only playing 22 minutes. It still looks to be a very fun season. Go Beavs!

She gets good position, catches the ball, keeps it high, and goes up for the shot. Very simple recipe for success. We had many, many turnovers last year on attempted passes into the post. I think those will be dramatically reduced this year.

While I have the chance and before I forget- It appears to me that Destiny has made a big second-year jump with respect to helping to create team flow this season. Kind of like Mik did last season. Players are always going to have good and bad shooting nights, but helping to create flow is something that can be done every night. Even last season I noticed that Destiny had her most effective scoring outings when she took her shots within team flow rather than attempting to create on her own. Leave the creating your own shot for the last 10 seconds oof the shot clock, before that you facilitate ball movement to create the best shot.

From what I've observed TOs have been a problem at time throughout much of Rueck's tenure. Not sure why that continues to be an issue, but it's there. The first half was very concerning, but they cleaned that up in the 2nd half. Hopefully that will not be repeated often. With 3 veteran guards who have all played the PG at times, you would not expect that to be an issue.
