Thought I would start a new thread for folks to share their observations on the game with Team USA.
The good
The freshman bigs handled themselves well. In a front line against a 6'6 former WNBA MVP and Defensive player of the year, The college player of the year from 3 years ago, and a WNBA all star in Nneka Ogwumike. They didn't get run over, really held there own on the boards, and competed well. The offensive rebound and put back from Jones over A'ja Wilson was a big time play.
Aleah was confident and steady against big time pressure. The growth in her game is just amazing. She hit big time shots and was confident with the ball. Just great to see.
The not so good.
We really had trouble adjusting and countering their pressure. The pick and roll was being blown up and we had a rough time countering the pressure. Also, their length and strength caused lots of deflections and steals. (Also 9 blocks I believe).
The will never happen again.
Mik had 2 rebounds. We had zero blocks. I don't see any chance of that happening again this year.
I for one am more excited for the season after seeing last night. It could be a very, very special year.

Kind of hard to know what level of effort we were seeing from team USA. So, I am not ready to conclude anything. I saw some awesome individual plays ( from OSU ), however, saw some really poor plays that could have been avoided with far better execution and , especially, halftime adjustments. Trying to penetrate for layups and trying to shoot from around the key was just allowing their length to collapse and block shots or close off passing lanes. The shooting for USA was not like we will see in most games this year. Our defense should be better and our shooters will be more successful at creating shooting space. Kat would have been a big boost. Happy to see the Freshmen play so well. Lots to look forward to !

Unfortunately I think first half was Team USA messing around. 2nd half I think they were doing the same thing, but decided to put the game away. I don't think they would have gone into an Olympic game with no gameplan and playing that poorly
With that said, our team played their tails off! Year should be amazing and another run for the Pac-12 title for the seniors!

Totally disagree. I sit courtside, and it was obvious up close that they were not "messing around". There is no question that they weren't in "Olympic" form - that's half of the reason why they are playing these games. The other reason for these games - the final team hasn't been named yet, and for half of the ladies these games are auditions. They didn't study any tape on OSU and they kept to vanilla schemes - but there was no lack of motivation.

Observations: We are going to be scary inside this year. Those Freshman will be a force. I don' think I have every seen any of our woman's teams have a player of size, (Taylor) do what she did on that offensive rebound (twice) put it back with lift. Actually jumping. Was an awesome move. Did it against an All-American I think. We will be similar this year as the past in that we seem to be a step or two slower. But the quality of the bigs is going to be the diff this year. They will be difference makers. Guards did too much dribbling into trouble and in ablility to get free. (Guards) Not likely to have any team on our schedule be able to lock us down like USA did. Slowly squeezed the life out of us. Got a lot of open shots but didn't shoot too well from deep. Tudor will really help. What happened to Corosdale (sp)? The glaringly obvious inability to set good screens all night will hurt us. Fortunately that is fixable. The USA is just stronger, quicker, just better, experienced, and aggressive. (Thanks Capt Obvious)

One thing that really jumped out at me about Jones and Brown is they have good hands. Throw them the ball, they will catch it, even if it is not an ideal pass. That's a huge skill for a post player to possess, and not easy to develop if you don't have it.

On the plus side rebounding margin was close and turnovers was even, although I doubt either coaching staff was happy with 17 TOs.

Not happy with 17 turnovers, but not bad considering the opponent and how many freshman/sophomores got large minutes. Remember when OSU went to LA, and had 20+ turnovers in the UCLA AND USC games?

What really left me scratching my head was the number of steals by the Beav's. Some of it was passing mistakes by the US team but also, in this game anyway, the Beav's were looking for steals in a way I saw in the Italian games, but never before by a SR team. Is he going to change it up this year?

The 41-6 is the truly scary part to me. Now the USA subs are even more talented than college 2nd tier/subs. But, until TC returns at full strength and IF JM and Kat return, OSU isn't deep with tons of meaningful D1 talent and experience. MW and JT just aren't what'll take in the post vs top 3-4 other Pac12 teams. Without Kat the backcourt experience is truly lacking. I was really surprised that the starters had that many minutes, over 30-35 seems a bit much this early in a meaningless (W/L wise) game. Without hoping for out of the box results, the frosh will have to play very well, not get injured or into any foul trouble. And, MP and DS might have to log a lot of 35 min games.

Might there be benefit from a “changing of the guards” to start the game. Aleah has improved her game and handle. There’s also a leadership aspect developing on her part. Destiny’s “energy” would be of value as a sub and would allow time to appraise the opponent and the flow of the game.

Destiny is far and away out best point guard. She starts. Period.

Last year Rueck left Aleah on the bench for the first 2-5 minutes so she could observe and then enter the game knowing what needs to be done. When Kat returns it will open up the opportunity to do it again this year.
