What is so special about Evina Westbrook that she should get to play this year? She voluntarily chose to leave Tennessee, knowing full well the NCAA rules for transfers. So did Geno when he signed her. She sits a year, just like Slocum, just like Boley, just like hundreds of others.

Taylor Jones was warming up with some nice moves from the right and left sides of the basket tonight. Here's a short video.

So did Geno when he signed her. She sits a year, just like Slocum, just like Boley, just like hundreds of others. It's not the player as much as the school. Sheppard created a toxic environment at her first school, with the coaches, other players and fans. And yet she transfers to notre dame and gets to play right away while Slocum and boley have to sit a year.

“and then the Superette for some candy, just like we used to from Sackett Hall in 1988....but I digress” They sell candy at the Superette? Did not know that. That's pretty funny cause I only ever bought beer from that establishment.

Did not see the game, just the highlights (much appreciated!) Yea, Taylor and Kennedy are definitely not projects. They do things that show they've been focusing on being good at basketball for a long time:
- They understand rebound angle probabilities. Jones in particular goes right to where the missed shot is most likely to be, and scored a bunch on putbacks because of it.
- Move to where there's a passing angle based on the defense's positioning and gives the passer a target.
- Set picks properly - Jones in particular. She'll probably get some moving pick calls on her, but she understands fundamentally what setting a pick means. Gets her body into the defensive player, waits for the screen to be used effectively, pins the defender and rolls to the basket at an angle the screen recipient can use, and can score if given the ball. She already looks better at the pick and roll than most of the our bigs we've ever had, save Marie's senior year.
- Both players move with purpose. Jone's post moves are quick and deliberate ... they look like they have been practices a whole bunch. Again, outside of Marie's senior year (and I'm including Ruthie), our bigs have often had to do too much thinking before making a move, and that impacts confidence and sometimes leading to traveling and imbalance on the shot. It's hard enough when you are getting bodied as well - which is what appears to be the main thing they're going to have to adapt to at this point.
I was feeling the orange tint of this thread was really heavy, but I guess I've fallen victim as well ... they indeed look like ballers.

LOL - other side of the store......yes, one could spend a whole college career purchasing beer and smokes from the Superette and not realize they also had a very nice selection of candy.....for the folks not old enough to buy alcohol and lacking the appropriate alternate documentation (and/or friends) perhaps? Usually my wife and I are rushing to the games, so today's relaxed walk down memory lane was a good one..... Go Beavers!

3. When we get Kat back at full strength, OSU will have the best guard/wings in the nation: NO DOUBT. Don't let our friends over at the Boneyard hear you say that. Too late! He already posted that there a number of times. Some of them have already had a conniption fit over it.

I was feeling the orange tint of this thread was really heavy, but I guess I've fallen victim as well ... they indeed look like ballers. Very astute observations. I think Kennedy and Taylor are among our first "natural" bigs - folks that have played big from their early days. And you are right - they show instincts and moves that many of our other bigs had to think to arrive at. Ruth was admittedly cerebral, Patricia was late to the hoop party, Marie/Jo played in Europe first...... I will also say the quality of coaching they received prior to their arrival here shows. I was very impressed with the Derby HS coach for example. For all of our irrational exuberance in this thread (and I contributed some of it), we will have to see how they do when they have a 6'2" / 6'3" Pac-12 veteran leaning on them, but not overthinking it is a good first step for them. I also believe SR has set up well for them - Italy, some relatively low-key exhibition matches......I think he senses a "fun year" ahead, and he is prepping for leaning harder on newbies than he has in recent times. But we *have* upgraded from last year, and that was a Sweet-16 / 3rd in Pac-12 team......so a bit of exuberance might be in order. Note SR *did* follow the "incumbent model" as I posited - he started Aleah, Janessa, Maddie, Destiny and Mik. But the minute Maddie had a TO (in just the first couple of possessions), he went to the bench, and he went to Taylor, not PM. Go Beavers!

Democrat-Herald Article regarding JonesOSU women's basketball: Jones has an impressive debut in exhibition blowout Taylor Jones expected to have some first-game jitters Sunday afternoon, but they never materialized as much as she thought they might. Having practiced inside Gill Coliseum the past couple days helped calm her down. And once she got into a rhythm, there was little to slow the freshman down.

Two interesting tidbits on Taylor Jones first game: playing time - 23 minutes; 5 for 5 at the line....Both stats add to the excitement she created.
I don't want get too gushy over her excellent Game One performance against a physically weaker team that travelled 3 times zones to get to Corvallis, but Taylor showed promise and flash last night that was undeniable and on full display - even for us amateur observers. The last two years we have grown accustomed to slow, methodical post play. So Jones' quick release, her smooth mobility in the paint, and her arms extended catch-and-shoot, were all impressive.
Coach has elevated Beaver Nation expectations for both Brown & Jones in every preseason interview - and in Game One we got an idea why.
Consider this: First game of the year, 4 returning starters, Corosdale did not play, and all of the chatter - including from the returning vets on this team - is about two freshmen players playing their first game at Gill....Yes, it's early, but this is an impressive beginning to the season.. GO BEAVS !!

Love this quote from TJ in the G-T. “Usually I just try to stand in the post and in high school it worked,” she said. “Now I’m competing against big girls, stronger girls and taller than me so I actually have to use my body and post up strong.”
What an advantage Taylor has in getting to practice against both *strong* (Maddie) and *tall* (Trish, Andrea and soon, Jelena).

Always love to see the unexpected happen in Beaver Land. Lunch pail U is a great way to top off our elite programs ; ala WBB, Baseball, Gymnastics- and more to come in the future. Upsets, 3 star athletes outperforming 5 stars, etc.

Understanding that it is an exhibition game against a smaller team, a few takeaways for me. - This is their best team at this stage of the season since 2015, the last time they went to Italy. I am sure this is related (they have been playing together longer than most November 1 teams), and that team went to the Final Four. - Jones is the best freshman big I have seen here in 25 years (which is how long I have been watching). With hard work and coaching, she has no ceiling as a player. - Brown looks like a great all-around player, especially as a passer. Her game has more finesse to it, and therefore I think there are many ways she can grow. Like Pivec, like Wiese, she seems perfectly comfortable being one of the best players on the court from day one. Its early, but she looks like a star to me. - I noticed the other day that if Pivec were to match last season's rebound total she would pass Ruth Hamblin as the team's all-time leading rebounder. That is sort of ridiculous. I suspect the presence of Jones and Brown, both of whom should be playing 25+ minutes a game by mid-season, will keep her from leading the team in rebounds again. She might score more in that case. - Pivec played point guard a lot, which surprised me. More than she did last year. Rueck knows a lot more about this than I do, but I like seeing her on the wing. - I hope Corosdale is OK. It will be interesting to see how her playing time shakes out with the freshmen. Last year she got much better as a rebounder but had a tough year shooting. I hope the latter recovers, because there might be a lot of open shots out there now.
The rest of the team looks fine and ready to go. I mean, this was a Top 10 team that is being fortified by what I suspect we will two of their best players by January.
