GT ArticleNoelle Mannen just wanted to keep playing basketball. A first-team 4A all-state player her senior season at Valley Catholic in 2018, Mannen had been in talks with the coaching staff at the University of San Francisco about a possible walk-on position with the Dons last year. When Mannen arrived on campus, she reached out about when tryouts might be and the coaches stopped responding.

She was a successful multi sport athlete in high school. Rueck and staff see something in her or else she wouldn't be here, I doubt he would have her on the team if she didn't bring something to the table.

She wouldn't be the first walk on that surprised everyone. A player's heart and desire often cannot be measured except under fire. I knew a player who was not offered a scholarship but was a last-minute replacement for scholarship opening. She was expected to redshirt her first year. After just one game she became a starter and made the league all-star team every year after that. She put up 29pts 19 boards against Cal when they were still good enough to beat Stanford. The Cal people were kicking themselves for not offering her. No scholarship offers except as a second thought to someone who became a double-double machine in college. She was as close to a walk on as you can get. You never know.
